Manually disable 5.1 surround sound

by KnownBrilliant5452

I have a Hisense 60A6G and everything works fine, except the audio specifically for the HBO max app. I have the tv hooked up to a stereo receiver through the optical out port on the tv. For some reason, the HBO max outputs 5.1 surround sound and my audio sounds weird because of it. For reference, Netflix and Amazon prime do not do this. I have checked all the audio settings and nothing seems to help. Is there a way to manually disable all 5.1 audio output from the TV to force the HBO app to output stereo sound?

This issue has persisted for at least a year from what I can find online and there's no fix. It happens with Disney+ too, and on multiple TVs. I have a U6G and it does the same thing. There's multiple threads about it in the Hisense and HBO subreddits, and Hisense blame it on the Apps, and neither HBO, Google, or Disney have acknowledged it.

I ended up buying a fire tv 4k on sale. Completely fixed the problem. There must be something wrong with the hbo max app with the built-in androidTV. Also, I like fire OS much better.

Why use a stereo receiver in the first place? Your TV natively supports surround sound
