Volume control in apartment building

by FUCKING__GNOMES

I have a Hisense 40in tv with android tv on it and for some reason the volume is constantly spiking to max along with random power ons or home presses when I have not interacted with the remote. I assume this is the result of shared apartment wifi, and someone accidentally connecting to my device. I’ve already named the tv “not your fucking tv :)” but am looking for a more concrete solution to prevent random control without just disconnecting from the internet. Thank you!

Shared apartment wifi without device isolation? Yeah, that's not good.

I'd probably get a travel router, connect that to your apartment wifi, and then connect all your devices to that instead. That would put a firewall between you and your neighbors.

Something like this would do the trick.

Shared WiFi across multiple apartments? That's unfortunate.

I'd be a little concerned about security on all my devices at that point.

Shared WiFi is madness. The solution is get your own damn WiFi and encrypt it!

Go to settings => device preference => Chromecast built-in => let other control your cast media => select "never"

See if that works.

I assume it has an infrared receiver? Could it be something else emitting IR in the room a little bit in a close frequency?

Did you figure it out? I'm really skeptical it's shared wifi like you're assuming. And at this point if it is, it'd have to be someone connecting intentionally now if it's happened that much.

Still suspecting IR. I have a fan right now that will randomly activate when I use a remote for other things. Not all the time, just maybe once a day. Usually if I do something like move the remote while hitting a button.

And I had a TV that would occasionally mute itself if I left the windows in the room open and it was sunny. I guessed something in the room was scattering natural IR light that was coming in, or redshifting light or something. If the blinds were down it NEVER happened.

If you don't need the IR port, try taping over or blocking it with something and see if the problem goes away. With the fan I eventually used some aluminum tape I had (big, wide, and 100% opaque) as a ghetto way to make it stop.

Also, come to think of it, how would what you're suggesting even work? To control via wifi you still have to pair with the Android TV. That I know of, you HAVE to connect the wifi app, the Android TV displays a pairing code, and you HAVE to enter that in the app. That's specifically for cases like this. And with Bluetooth you still have to approve the pairing. And will see the connected remote in the remotes list.

I really don't think the wifi is your problem.

Anyone having a problem with screen darkening while watching Hulu only? I think I've changed settings for this not to happen, so I hope it's the App. Thanks
