A List of Ways to Speed Up Your Android TV Device

by foundfootagefan

I've been using Android TV since the Nexus Player first came out and I have some tips to speed up your device that worked for me. These are obvious to advanced users but newbies will find these useful.

  • Remove the Google TV launcher and replace it with FLauncher by using the instructions in the link below. (Advanced)

https://gitlab.com/etienn01/flauncher#set-flauncher-as-default-launcher

  • Disable the Google app if you don't use it. Go to Settings > Apps > Google app and Disable it so it never runs in the background. (Easy)

  • If syncing Google info isn't important to you, disable syncing of all your information to your Android TV device so it never syncs in the background. Go to Settings > Accounts > Your account > disable all the sync activities like Calendar, People details, Contacts, etc. (Easy)

  • Experiment with using open-source apps instead of using proprietary apps that use a lot of resources. Use S0undTV instead of the official Twitch app. You can also try alternatives to popular open source apps like Kodi. I prefer using /r/NovaVideoPlayer/ over Kodi, for example, because it is Android native.

  • Don't let your device storage get close to full. Stop using apps that constantly download data. If you have a big Kodi library with tons of metadata, you may have to just use Kodi without downloading metadata.

  • Keep your device away from hot devices like the back of your TV or other devices that emit heat. Put it in a place with good airflow or at least a cool surface. Some people even report putting their device on a small metal surface to use as a heatsink to cool it further.

Dev settings and change: animation scale for window/ transitional animation scale/ animator duration scale, from 1 to 0.5 or completely off

If your device is older and low on free space, especially if it's been through a few major updates, a factory reset can free up a lot of space. I found this with my Shield.

If you disable the Google app, is voice search disabled system-wide as well?

Nova Player is not bad in features, but it is unable to play some videos, VLC works perfect for me.

I use Google TV, but I definitely have had success with speeding up the OS - via disabling Data Saver, putting on "app only" mode, using the Task Manager (clean up background apps), and I force close apps - manually - after using them. I rarely have any lag

I guess its relative but I have a Shield tube, a CCWGTV, and a TCL Android TV and I don't find any of them slow. They're as fast as my previous Roku's.

What you want to is still use Flauncher

And get this app right here

https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=flar2.homebutton

You use Button Mapper to make one button on your remote that you do not use open up the Flauncher

So after you reboot your android tv box or stick after it has fully booted up

You hit that button you mapped to Flauncher go into Flauncher and start using your TV

That way you still get all of the functionality of your android box or stick

Enjoy and yes this will speed up your tv

You forgot adjusting the animation speeds in the Developer Settings down to 0.5x or 0x to make the whole UI feel faster.

I’m on an older Bravia release from the surprise 2020 upgrade. It’s never been snappy after that update. Today, I stopped Samba Services Manager and it’s not enabled in the system config either. Holy Snappy Interface Batman! The downside is even though it is disabled it will return on a reboot and still way disabled. I’ll have to cut out tv.samba.ssm with the ADB scalpel later. I also might be able to kill Sony Shelf/Select with this release. Flauncher is now configured, but this was clearly eating resources.

You missed "Sell it and buy a HTPC".
