Starting with Android 9 you can use the SPDIF port of the Mi Box to output Dolby Digital 5.1, DTS 5.1 and PCM 2.0 when you select the SPDIF option in Audio settings, Dolby Digital Plus also gets transcoded to Dolby Digital when using streaming services like Netflix, Disney Plus, etc.
SPDIF is flaky on the Mi Box. I never got it to work correctly on anything.
That being said, I had to buy THIS to get it to work. It worked flawlessly after I installed it.
If your 5.1 sound system supports optical but not HDMI, then YES,you can by using this one.
