I'm looking for an Alternative to Kodi for Android TV.
Please note that I want to play local videos, not interested in any software that requires a server. Please do not suggest any software that requires a server to host the media.

AndroidTv is the alternative for Kodi. Using kodi is just using a platform on top of a platform.
With the low volume on some encodes , try installing Mxplayer and using the custom codec https://forum.xda-developers.com/t/mx-player-custom-codec-ac3-dts-mlp-truehd-etc.2156254/
In Nova settings change to allow other players and give it a whirl
As for resume playback not came across that issues , good thing about Nova is it has remote resume so as long as devices on the same network you can install Nova on other devices and watch and resume in any room.
Let's ask the question of why you are looking for alternatives.
What's wrong with the bare bones version of Kodi for local stuff?
Infuse 7 on AppleTV, pay and ask support to fix everything.
I tried something called Nova Player a while back, but it had its own problems. Maybe it's better now.
i wish someone would make something decent, like Infuse was on Apple TV a few years ago. Because Kodi sucks.
I responded already to others.. stuttering
I'm having the same problem, using an Nvidia shield. I think it's related to the updates from Nvidia to be honest.
I have looked at lots of other solutions, I'm thinking I might do emby as a local server on my shield. It seems to have most of the functionality that I use Kodi for.
PLEX work much better with native sistem exoplayer.
Android TV never work fine with local file HD/USB, only app using sistem exoplayer( DLNA or plex/emby) have good optimization.
If you want a "local file player", buy a corelec/libreele borad o zidoo/dune box.
Beta is here too of Nova with many Fixes
Then you must be looking to try the most excellent Nova Video Player . On the play store ,open source and its fantastic
