Dolby Vision from external HDD?!

by MrAnte06

Heyy!

I am wondering if there is any way to play dolby vision content from my external hdd on my Hitachi 50HAL7351 4K android tv?

I know that my TV does support Dolby Vision and HDR. But I do wonder if there is some way to either play a Dolby Vision MP4 or Dolby Vision MKV file on my TV, in a media player like VLC or Nova video player?!

I have played a Dolby Vision MKV file before in Nova video player, and it played normally, but I can't know if that movie really showed me true Dolby Vision. Some media players don't have support for it yet and automatically converts Dolby Vision to HDR10, and I have been searching for a solid answer to this mess but every site says a different thing.

So if Dolby Vision does work in some media player, does it make a difference then if it is a Dolby Vision MKV or a MP4?

If you have an answer I would be very thankful!

A lot of the things that TV’s advertise for only work with an external player like a nvidia shield. I ended up getting one after I found out that I couldn’t use a hard drive plugged into my tv to play movies in Dolby truehd and it would struggle with other high quality aspects too. Would strongly suggest getting a shield if you want to use your own files

Yes.. a few caveats though - if you're using a remux, while usb 2.0 could technically do it most of the time, usb 3 would give you a bit more overhead for bitrate spikes.

Also the player and hardware has to be able to decode either visual format.

Knowing what Dolby Vision profile the media is and what profile the SOC in the TV can play will help determine the compatibility. Web DLs are normally 5 Blu-rays are normally 7
