[tutorial] Walmart Onn. 4K TV Android Streaming Box - Setup, Unlock Bootloader, Root, remap buttons and more!

by spacedengineer007

Hey guys! I made a YouTube video on how to take Onn Tv Box from set-up, to unlocked bootloader/root, to debloating, adding a custom launcher, to using Tasker to "re-route" the buttons on the remote and more. Hope it helps anyone having trouble or new to the device! The info came from many threads around this community and I just wanted to put it all in once place and give back to you all. Thanks!

Will watch this in a bit since it's like midnight here but won't unlocking your bootloader cause Netflix and other apps to run at 480p? Even with magisk unless the rom optimised the CTS stuff. Been a while since I played with magisk since my custom rom usually run everything like bank apps etc flawlessly ootb.

And do you know anything with regards to using external USB to Ethernet adapters?

Thanks for making a video. It's overall not worth it to use LineageOS custom rom since HD Netflix and others don't work (hardware OMX), but it's nice to unlock bootloader to root with Magisk & change buttons easier. Only have to re-do process with each update. But at least we do get updates thankfully.

Good tutorial. Eventually they will probably send an ota update that enforces anti-bootloader-rollback, blocks bootloader unlocking, or burns an efuse to disable other modes.

So, it might be a good idea to keep a spare on hand that is not updated. The device is getting too popular for them to just leave it wide open much longer, and public tutorials that any poor slob can execute just makes them (and all of the interested parties) more aware of this.

I also noticed that it appears that you sourced boot.img from a factory image of an older version of the firmware than was currently installed on the device.

That works now, but there could come a time when a non-matching version of boot.img won't work with a newer version of the firmware.

Do you know if it supports "captive portals", that is wifi that needs to be logged into via a web page, so that it could be easily used in a hotel?

This is great! But is there a guide for basic tasks like removing unnecessary apps running in the background, removing apps in general, recommended setting changes for smooth running iptv etccc for people who are buying this for their parents for example.

my remote stopped working. battery is fine, cannot figure out how to re-pair it to the box without factory resetting everything. please help

Would having a custom recovery help not loose root? Or just help with the rooting process? I know there is a version of LineageOS's custom recovery made for this box

Does anyone know if the universal saftynet fix would fix the 480 issue with Netflix?

For those finding this in the future, the video was taken down from youtube but OP has a copy on Odysee. Please support them there:
