vpn + drm + chromecast = not working...

by ghiste

Hi,

I am trying to watch films from the uk-based channel 4 streaming service on my tv.

I am however not located in the uk, so I use a vpn.

On my pc everything works, but as I said I want to watch it on my tv, so I have tried to chromecast from a chrome browser running on my pc (that is able to play the movie) to my tv.

The tv is visible as a chromecast device and I can connect to it, when I do that while the movie is playing I get a picture on my tv but the movie does not play on my tv.

I never really understood how chromecast actually works, so I am not sure if what I want to do is actually achievable.

So my question: Should it be possible to chromecast a drm protected stream that is accessed via a vpn from a pc to the tv?

If so, what do I need to do to make it work?

Many thanks!

no, chromecast accesses the stream from the internet directly, not from the casting device

Easier to just connect your PC to TV with an HDMI cable & mirror the PC screen

Setup VPN on your router.

I tried to use a VPN service on my phone which was set as portable hotspot. The TV was connected at my phone. And it didn't work. I guess that there's something that is blocking use of VPN.
