Chromecast with Google TV questions.

by gcsmith1342

I have two questions regarding the Chromecast with Google TV:

  1. Can I use the Chromecast device as a mobile hotspot for my phone and PC to connect to in order to better cast to it? I am a college student and my school's policy won't allow smart tv devices and laptops/tablets/phones be connected to the same WiFi network. If I were to use the Chromecast as a hotspot, I could connect to said hotspot with my phone or laptop to cast.

  2. With a USB hub, can I have another device go through HDMI into the Chromecast and switch between inputs using the remote? I am using a large monitor instead of a TV, so it would be nice if I could have the sound and video from my Xbox go through the Chromecast. This would let me not have to keep switching sources and I would theoretically be able to use the Bluetooth speaker that's connected to my Chromecast.

Very janky setup, but I'm working with a budget. Any answers or advice would be appreciated!

  1. No. Get a cheap 5Ghz AP
  2. No. Get a cheap HDMI "switch" (not an expensive "splitter")

No No

No and no.

But you don't have to cast to it, it has a full UI and remote.

For 1st one...use Miracast/screen cast....2nd one... impossible

If the Miracast version is not working, get a GLI Net Mango travel router and put it in repeater mode. Connect it to the college wifi and create a new wifi based on that. Connect your phone and chromecast to that wifi network. I use this setup often in hotels, works fine for me.

Tbh the cc with gtv wifi antenna is terrible barely picks up much of a signal...only way is through ethernet or use phone as a hotspot or wifi ethernet bridge to improve matters
