Let's talk about the $20 Onn android tv from Walmart...

by SnowTauren

TL;DR THIS THING IS FREAKING AWESOME!

I do not understand people still advocating for Nvidia shields in 2022, I have 3 Shields (2017 version), these devices are buggy, I've faced anything from controller randomly scrolling to device just freezing and refusing to do anything until I unplug and replug it, I then bought a MiBox for $50, this has been my new favorite device, has a remote that actually isn't completely useless like the Shields. Then I bought this $20 Onn device from Walmart, and I have to say just WOW, so far it's been bug free, has a remote that can control tv and device at the same time like the shield can but works better. MORE SNAPPIER THAN A SHIELD & MiBox while navigating the menus and launcher. Probably not as fast while gaming, but if you're not gaming do yourself a favor and buy this thing. I hope this helps someone whose looking to buy a device for streaming.

clarkss12

It is a nice basic media streamer, but not for everyone.

If you have a nice audio surround system, the Onn does NOT passthrough the HD audio codecs, including Dolby Atmos....... Also, there is NO automatic framerate and resolution switching........... The Nvidia Shield does support those items..... Buttt, the Nvidia's remote is horrible.....

I am a weird dude.... I have two mini PC's, and an assortment of Android boxes connected to my main 4k 65" TV with a Yamaha AVR.... I have a 2019 Nvidia (rarely use because of the horrible remote), TiVo Stream 4k, Onn box, Mecool KM2, Mecool KM6, Mecool KD3, etc.

Just listing **some* of my media players (addicted to them), to back up what I am saying about these boxes.

Right now, I am using this ONN box to watch some videos from the Peacock app. It works perfectly for that media.....

rooser1111

I mean no auto res switching and framerate matching is a huge deal breaker for me. Until androidtv 12 properly supports these features, onn and other cheap android tv boxes are useless to me. I rather stick to firestick or coreelec.

I'm also impressed with how snappy the Onn runs, and it even appears to keep things in memory better than the Sheild. For $20 it's a steal, and it comes with a great remote as well.

zerozed

I've got zero experience with Nvidia Shield, but the ONN box is awesome. I've got a CCWGTV, a roku, and 2 Fire sticks--the ONN wins by a landslide. It gets updates (unlike the Google device), the remote is awesome, and it's fast. Hell, it doesn't even have any bullshit Walmart nonsense anywhere (unless you count Vudu).

1bamofo

100% same experience as you.

A few notes for those interested in this device.

1 - update it ... don't even bother trying to set it up until you've allowed it to update.

2 - update the remote. There is a firmware update for the remote ... let it update.

3 - Get yourself one of these - https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00CXAC1ZW/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o01_s01?ie=UTF8&th=1

4 - Get yourself one of these (or equivalent) - https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B06XG9XP49/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o01_s01?ie=UTF8&th=1

5 - Do this - https://troypoint.com/android-tv-adoptable-storage/

I've had my Onn device hooked up for several months and find that it does occasionally lock up. A task killer of your choice will assist with this. I've used button mapper to map a Task Killer to my bookmark button (short press) and Reboot menu for long press. This helps me quickly restart the thing without having to unplug and reboot. I never have to touch it.

Good Luck!!

I love the Onn device. It sent the Roku to the thrift store. It's fast, doesn't ever lose wifi, and for $20 you get the box, remote, power supply, HDMI cable, and even batteries for the remote! Install downloader and the ad-less, sponsor-less YT, then Prime, Netflix, PBS, etc. and it's off to the races.

PeteUKinUSA

I would say for $20 they’re great. But they’d still be great at more than that. I’ve had Fire TV, Shield, Apple TV’s and I’ve even got an AT&T Osprey box laying around.

The only Android devices I have that are snappier than this are 2 new Sony Bravias, and even then it’s a close thing.

gthrift

I have 4 of the uhd boxes and they’re great. Not as good as an Nvidia Shield but light years ahead of the crappy smart TVs that I hooked them up to. They’re responsive, every streaming app I use works well, the remote is fantastic, and they receive semi regular updates. I’m not sure what more you could want.

SSJStarwind16

I'm sure it's great for $20 but not having Dolby Vision is a nonstarter for me.

Sandlotje

Agreed 100%! I've got two Shield TVs and find that my experiences for streaming media are nearly identical on both boxes. They're both fast, responsive, and stream TV and movies equally well.

I got the Onn boxes because traveling with the Shield is so cumbersome. The Walmart box is a million times easier to pack and connect. I couldn't be happier with them. I don't think they've ever let me down or left me feeling like they're inferior to the Shield in any way. 👍

mediocre_mitten

Just bought one two days ago.

I went looking for a roku for bedroom tv I had hooked up to an old laptop but wanted something with a remote.

Decided to save the $10 (I mean that's two gallons of gas now!) and get the ONN. '

This little thing is awesome. The remote even turns on/off my 20+ year old tv!

NRG1975

Was skepitical a year so ago, then bought one cause was sick of my slow Nexus Players .... same reaction as you. The only issue, nd I miss from the NP is the dedicated USB port. Otherwise, the thing is fantastic for 70 bucks, even though it cost 20.

SRGilbert1

If price isn’t a factor, how does it otherwise compare to the CCWGTV units?

Tyraelos

That is the world of Android. Most devices work very well with fewer apps loaded. The more apps the device runs, the slower the or laggier the experience which is why most truthful users will tell you that their best experience is with a task killer or an app to automatically reboot the device every now and again (maybe weekly).

I’ve just about given up on Android. I’ve switched my main and bedroom TVs to Roku TVs + Apple TV 4Ks. Family who are savvy use the Apple TV’s and those who aren’t stick with Roku.

My Chromecast (the new one) was rock solid for all of 6 months but once it started filling with apps, it started lagging. I.cannot.stand.lag. So I now only leave the big streamers on it and leave it plugged in to my main TV so it updates and stuff, but I only really use it when I travel in which case it is awesome. Had I gotten the Onn before, I’d likely have been satisfied with it but I got the Google device for free for trialing a service so, no biggie either way.

The Onn 4k is no different. If you stick with a few apps, you’ll run great but if you use all the big streamers (Hulu, Disney+) and also decide to get channel based apps (Syfy, Disney Now, etc) you’ll find that it will start to lag significantly.

xartle

I will say that it seems like the Shield's OS updates are doing it no favors... I swear every Nvidia update makes it slower and more buggy. The Shield in 2019 was great. But as it stands today, the Onn is better, cleaner and just feels faster.

JonnySpark

Just bought one to replace the old Mi Stick.

Snappy af.

ThatOneDuder710

Yeah, I use Stadia, Kodi, Plex, and Stremio on it, it replaced my old firestick.

I also managed to get magisk installed on it but we'll see how log hat lasts before an ota update

tijeladeacai

Wi-Fi is not great. I am having buffering issues with this box, an issue that I have never had my Firestick 4K. Plus it doesn’t match your TV’s screen ratio. I had to adjust to 96% ( LG C1).

just_freq

Like to mention the original Chromecast is good too even to this day. For youtube and maybe other apps too there is a TV UI and a remote control and voice search on your phone, don't know how how google does it with such old hardware but navigation is fast and smooth.

Moderatorator

My only issue with it is that it starts to overheat after a few months and that causes the remote module to disconnect.

epictetusdouglas

I have 2, got them months ago and they have been flawless. Bought connectors and have them hooked up to Ethernet. Like them better than CCWGTV both because of the remote and because they actually leave some storage after installing all my apps.

verywise

The Onn is perfect to take along when travelling. I recently used it at an AirBnB and I didn't realize how nice it is to have all your stuff just work. It's cheap enough that you can get an extra one just for trips.

vinarian-

I jumped on the band wagon and got one of the onn streamers the week they came out... It was horrible. Wifi kept dropping, menus kept locking up, it would turn off randomly while watching Kodi... Of course it has since had some major software updates, but my original experience is what prompted me to get a shield pro.

I keep wanting to try the onn streamer again, it would pair nicely with my outdoor projector, but I can't find the stupid thing...

cochorol

Can it run Kodi?

Big_Stand_6897

Does it run the Twitch app looking to upgrade from my flex box

goonies969

Have you tried Chromecast with Google TV? $50 and it supports Dolby Vision, Atmos, 4K, etc.

latinriky78

Can you tell me the date of the current security patch?

amin915

I have one for my outside tv and it's been great! Bought the 14 dollar stick as a back up

Longjumping_Top281

Has anyone had any success using send anywhere app on the onn tv box. It crashes everytime I open it

Such-Shape-7111

Just picked it up. Installed TiviMate and it works much better than my 4K Max firestick in terms of speed, beautiful UI and no amazon SPAM / ADS on the home screen.

rival_22

I have one for our bedroom TV, and it's much snappier than my cheap Hisense Android TV in our living room.

I did notice that every month or so, it seems like it freezes up and I have to unplug it and plug it back in.

maddog1956

I had a CCwGTV ($49) before switching to ONN UHD android tv ($29). The ONN does blow the CCWGTV out of the water for the money. Here's a few things I've notice.

  1. Voices would get out of sync with Youtube TV using CCWGTV and not with ONN. Still seems a little funky but Youtube TV just runs much better with it.

  2. ONN got a later security update than CCwGTV.

3 Seems more open with more "How to videos"

  1. The interface is very simlar but ONN seems a little more useful.

  2. Seems faster and smoother

  3. Storage was a little more complicated to set up.

  4. Power is supplied with microUSB instead of USB C. Only important if you're using a hub/etc that outputs usb c.

It works so good I just purchased it just to play with and end up replacing my CCwGTV immediately.

I would certainly recommend the ONN over CCwGTV to anyone.

Honestly this post is a life changer. I have bought 6 or 7 of these for family members with EXISTING smart tvs and they preferred this over the built in Smart functions, one thing great about this running Android OS is that you can sideload apps easier. We were able to cut out our cable TV with an IPTV service which is a 1/3 of the cost saving us money in the long run! Updates are quick and fast to install. The overall content for this 20 dollar Onn walmart device is worth every cent!

xboxofrocksx

Can someone recommend some free apps for movies, NFL, sports ?

jkroxxx

can you chromecast to the device? Im signed into acocunts on my phone and its way easier to chromecast than sign into accounts

FloofyFloofOverload

Are we talking a full fledged TV or just a box?

izhar12

Bro it is not available outside US. There's people living outside US you know that?
