...go to the Sony website for your region and then Support...enter your model number and from there you'll see Downloads for your model....
...I'd also go into your own settings and find your exact version, usually in About afaik, you actually are at the moment....it's one thing thinkin you must have an update and quite another that Sony has released one.
...I think you're out of luck as regards updates...as for rooting I'd be concerned that doing it for a phone is one thing but Android TV is unto itself afaik but it's not something I've tried or researched...
...I've a 2016 kd 55xd8005 that's still getting updates but I can see where that may soon stop...having said that they've transformed it from a laggy buggy TV to a flying machine that gets lots of compliments re the screen.
..Id be inclined to relegate yours to a kid room etc and make the jump..
I've had the OTA update not appear but it's pretty easy to update with usb...format a 8gb one say, download the file on your PC , unzip the file and move it to the usb. With the TV off plug in the usb, I've found that the TV finds it immediately once it's turned back on and follow instructions..having the remote at this point is handy.
One thing I would say is check for definite that your TV has an update, as different regions get different updates...other than that you're grand.
