Any AndroidTV boxes that aren't passively cooled?

by MrJake94

Looking for a device for my Mum who lives in a country where temperature is regularly in excess of 30c.

Chromecast with Google TV just overheats and drops network connection

I've been looking at the Mi Box S but concerned it will have similar issues.

My only other option is the Shield TV but that is hugely overkill for what she needs, but appears to be the only device that has some sort of cooling solution?

Any recommendations?

Shield! Here it is +35 degrees 8 out of 12 months, never had any issues

as u/UsaytomatoIsayFuckU says: pick up a small fan (desk, clip-on, whatever) of some sort and just point it at the Chromecast. Quick, cheap, easy.

Can't you hack a cooling solution to current devices?

In South Africa I use a Mi Box S

I ran a mibox 3 for 5 years with temps hitting high 30's during summer and never had an issue.

Recently picked up a google tv with chromecast but it's cooler so I haven't used it above mid 20s. The documentation for mine says it's designed to operate best between 0 and 40c ambient temperature, so if it had issues at 35c it'd be a hardware problem and could be replaced under warranty.

If that isn't an option and you're sure it's only the wifi chip conking out, you could consider buying an ethernet adapter and hardwiring it to your router.

The Nvidia Shield Pro has active fan cooling and it is very quiet.

It also has Gigabit LAN and two USB3 ports that can support USB 3 powered hubs, plus dual band wifi, Bluetooth accessories, Dolby formats. ( ͡ᵔ ͜ʖ ͡ᵔ )
