Am I better off running my TV without HDR considering the earlier tech my TV uses?

by Catchmycousin

I have a Sony KD55X7055 that does have HDR but not the fancy kind. I use a Realme 4K stick and sometimes, even with HDR content, I imagine the image gets a bit blown out, depending on how the material is mastered or something. Maybe 4K SDR is overall better quality using different streaming services?

if the tv has no local dimming you're better off turning hdr off

It looks like tv has HDR brightness close to 300. I would say use SDR, you are not missing much.

Probably. I have a Sony XH9096 (X900H) in some countries and I prefer to watch content with HDR off

That's a good question!

Yes, very likely. I have a Sony XF85 and I run it in SDR at all times. While the TV says it's capable of HDR, the SDR image looks much better almost all the time.

Also (don't know if this means anything to you) but running in SDR mode not only looks better, but saves about 50% of energy use and brightness on these TV models.

If it looks blown out it probably didn't switch to HDR mode. Or HDR mode is not really HDR mode. Generally HDR will make picture look darker on a bad TV so just stick with SDR. You will have much better experience.

Fiddle around with the picture settings menu. I have a similar Sony TV though not exact same model and HDR usually plays fine (with the exception of BBC iPlayer, but that's nothing to do with the TV.

Until your tv supports minimum 700 peak brightness, you should not consider HDR streams. You are not loosing too much in SDR.
