Just bought an android tv and it’s amazing but I’m having one issue. When I’m connected to YouTube via my phone I can’t use the remote to pause etc. I can only lower the volume and that’s it.

That is normal. You are casting Youtube to your TV from your phone. All functions for YouTube such as Play, Pause, Forward, Rewind, have to be controlled right on your phone.
