Does Google TV (the app or the os) have a way of showing some sort of notification when new episodes of shows in your watchlist are available?
I like the way Apple TV handles it where they will show up in the "watch next" row.

This needs to be addressed how is this not a function on google tv? I made the switch over from apple tv and this is a feature i miss alot
It'll show up in "continue watching" row, but not for shows in watchlist.
It'll show up for ongoing shows that you're watching.
Recently, I've started playing around with some of the third party apps that do this. There's Syncler, JustWatch, ReelGood, and probably a few others. I've been gravitating more towards ReelGood as it has a bit of a simpler interface. It has a "Watch Next" tab that basically tracks what's new based on the shows you've told it you have added to your watch list. I'm curious if anyone else uses these types of apps and which ones ya'll might recommend.
I agree. Even though I've largely switched away from Apple's ecosystem, this is one feature that has -- so far at least -- forced me to keep my Apple TVs around. I almost cannot believe Google/Android TV doesn't do this yet.
