Mi Stick 4k 5.1 audio on older Receiver

by 400trips

Hey guys, I've got a question that you'll probably be able to answer.

I'm about to buy a Xiaomi Mi Stick 4k and wanted to know if I'll be able to get Dolby Digital (the "old" 5.1 one, not DD+ or Atmos) in my current setup.

I have a Samsung KS8000 and an old receiver connected by HDMI ARC. I get DD and DTS (again, the "old" 5.1 ones) without any issues using ARC in the built in apps on the TV, on my PS5 and using the Receiver by itself.

Rtings says that my TV does DD/DTS passthrough, if this matters in this situation.

So the question is: In my current setup, will I be able to get DD audio from the Mi Stick 4k to my receiver connected to the HDMI ARC port of my KS8000?

The Mi Stick has a Dolby Atmos certification (Dolby Audio is included), BUT, if the stick doesn't have the Amlogic SoC variant which sports the conversion (the variant has a letter B in the SoC, such as S905Y4-B) you won't get the conversion unless Xiaomi implemented that conversion by software like the Nvidia Shield 2019 does, I must clarify that turning on the codecs manually as stated in the video shared by u/audaciousnomad doesn't do the conversion.

One easy way to know if the SoC or the software conversion is implemented is by checking if the "5,1" logo appears in any movie or TV show in Netflix when the device is connected to a TV or AV receiver with only Dolby Digital decoding by HDMI.
