Disney+ Took Away Atmos on 2020 Android TV!

by Darkknight3940

So it looks like I am no longer getting an Atmos signal from the Disney+ app on my Sony Bravia X950H (Android TV 9) since the latest update to version 2.9.1-rc1. The title pages of the content still read Dolby Atmos but I’m only getting Dolby Digital+ 5.1 signals now. A poster on AVS Forum brought this up when he got the update several days ago before me. Sure enough it has now happened to me as well. And according to the poster on AVS Forum the Disney customer service rep he chatted with said that Atmos should have never been available for his 2020 TV in the first place. So I have had Atmos for well over a year and Disney just yanked it away. NOT COOL!!! 😠. Anyone else with an X950H get the update and experiencing this?

Eyetron2020

I replied to you in the Bravia sub but I'll say it here. Something happened to me within the past day or two that broke Atmos on my native Disney+ app in my Sony A80J. BUT when I cast Disney+ with my phone to the TV's built-in Chromecast, the Atmos works.

ColdAndSnowy

They’ve broken this about three times now with updates. Probably be fixed in 3-6 months.

A80j watched episode 6 of andor and thought this sounds flat, checked only getting stereo, not even 5.1 Netflix working fine. Venom worked and got 5.1 but rogue 1, werewolf, shehulk all stereo. Very poor. Was getting annoyed with Disney plus anyway, this is the nail in the coffin for me. Not renewing this.

Still not working on Sony tv version 2.12.0-rc3

For me Disney+ never had center channel audio on my soundbar. That's regardless of output settings or using optical or arc, its really annoying. If I cast it from my phone the sound is great though.

Restricting something like that based on the year of the tv and not the capabilities is ridiculous.

I really wonder if the devs of the disney+ app are on crack or something.

juzmafia

Try downgrade to version 2.8.0-rc2.
With version v2.9.1, atmos is also not working on Shield TV.

A80J and no Atmos. Wanted to watch Prey tonight.

I thought my receiver had a problem!! But when i switched to Netflix the Atmos was working. I have a Hisense TV with Android TV

Found this thread while trying to figure out what happened. On my U8G it stopped working as well. Usually I get a green light on my Vizio soundbar when DA plays but it was white this time.

I'm noticing similar to others that anything with Dolby Atmos seems to run only in 2.0 channels (using Google TV with Sony A7000 soundbar), yet non Dolby Atmos titles are running with proper surround.

Other apps with Dolby Atmos run completely fine, so no idea what they've done to the Disney app to cause it to behave like this...

I bet it is a problem again with Disney+ app (at least on a Google TV, plugged into a LG SP11RA, and E-ARC'd into an LG C1). I just noticed how flat the sound on Andor seemed, and so I checked a few other Disney+ films I know used to have Atmos - no dice. So, I spent like 30 minutes messing with my device settings, and even switched out all my HDMI cables before declaring defeat.

Then, I checked back here and it seems I'm not the only one with problems.

FBuzzard

Same issue with my Chromecast with Google TV.

dp20derek

sme here but today its outputting Atmos like normal! no update or anything! it just somehow fixed itself

FBuzzard

Seems to be fixed now, with the same app version. They must have changed something server side.

Atmos doesn't work on A80J with Bose 900 Soundbar not even 5.1 just 2.0 output

Question: how can you tell what signal is coming out?

Honest-Ad-2231

Atmos is not working from Disney+ on my Sony A80J with LG SP11RA, it is working well with HBO Max content

Honest-Ad-2231

I've just casted Obi-Wan Kenobi from Disney+ app in my mobile to My Google TV and the soundbar has shown de Dolby Atmos message, so casting from the mobile app is the current workaraound we have

Ryzyryry

Take this with a large grain of salt, as I get a little confused with Atmos, so please anyone, correct me if I'm wrong

I read a few articles about how confusing Dolby Atmos is and it seems like it's mostly not possible while using a streaming service and also heavily relies on the device you're streaming from. Dolby Atmos is actually metadata that piggybacks off of existing surround formats to create the 3d sounds. The 2 formats are Dolby Digital Plus and Dolby True HD.

Typically, 'Dolby Atmos' content will be streamed as a compressed audio format such as Dolby Digital Plus, but can still appear as Atmos on the device. Dolby Atmos with Dolby True HD is actually true Atmos and mostly only achieved through Ultra HD Blue ray players and Atmos encoded blue rays. So it's quite misleading when it comes up on your TV or soundbar app as Dolby Atmos output. Maybe what they did here is alter the signal to correctly state it is DD+ as it never was actually Atmos, or like you say, they totally removed the Atmos encoding altogether, which sucks.

I have a Google TV Chromecast that used to show Disney+ shows as Atmos on my SONOS ARC but now shows as DD+ 5.1. It still sounds just as good though, so I still think I am getting the compressed Atmos mixed in there too. Or I just never had Atmos to begin with and have no idea what it truly sounds like.

If the content sounds worse and less 3 dimensional then it certainly appears they have removed Atmos. If it still sounds the same, you may have always been receiving the DD+ signal and your TV was being tricked to displaying it as Atmos.

Still broken. Wth is going on?broken on google chromecast Android tv thingy..

smuller1976

Still not fixed on NVIDIA Shield 2019 Pro. Any updates when they are going to fix this or should we do a rollback?

Strange_Vegetable_15

Oh yes the last update on my Nvidia shield that they're going to give me these wonderful updates and fix all their little bugs and glitches.... I responded with you're a billion dollar company and you're charging for something that we want do you guys bother testing out your stuff before rolling out? How do you feel that you've updated bugs and glitches when you've caused more of a problem as it takes forever with my gigablast internet watching the blue circle gets stuck and now no Dolby Atmos SMH on steroids 🤮

bschellva

I just noticed this tonight when watching Disney+ on my Sony tv. Is it fixed for everyone else? I'm really annoyed by this.

Dr-Coktupus

I noticed this too

Eyetron2020

Atmos through the Disney+ Google TV app broke again for me. Chromecasting it with my phone still has working Atmos though like before.

AffectionateSun6904

Same issue Sony 950h no longer getting Dolby atmos on Disney plus. I see it as Dolby digital plus. I first experienced this while watching Andor .I did check other Dolby atmos content on Disney plus with the same issue.Netflix and other streaming content is working without issue.

FBuzzard

And months after the orginal post Disney broke it AGAIN. My CCwGTV plays Dolby Atmos just fine with Vudu, Prime Video and Netflix. Disney+ is stereo now although I somehow convinced it to play 5.1. Disney really needs to do better regression testing on new versions, or start a beta program that users can opt into in the Play Store like other apps do.

Darkknight3940

Well the good news is that we don’t have 2.0 stereo output anymore and it is now outputting 5.1. The bad news is still no Atmos and can’t use the Apple TV work around because now I’m only getting 5.1 on it as well 🤨

Darkknight3940
OHHMiii
