Looking for advice - I need a streaming box for which I can completely disable Bluetooth and WiFi

by JoelGould

I cannot have Wifi, Bluetooth or even cell phone in my house. I have wired Ethernet. I am looking for a streaming box for Netflix, Disney+, Hulu, HBO Max, etc. I tried a Roku, but even with the IR remote, the Bluetooth still broadcasts occasionally. Any thoughts?

I have to ask, Why can't you have WiFi in your Apartment??

CrustyBatchOfNature

Big problem is going to be the remote on most of them. They are mostly bluetooth. There may be some Roku that don't even have Bluetooth. Check for those.

BTW, unless you live a mile from anyone else and never leave the house, you already have the radiation from all of these things around all of the time. Hell, cellphone radiation is going to be there no matter what without you living in the middle of nowhere where no provider has service.

I don't believe such a product exists. Services like Netflix won't work on devices that have not been approved.

If you're ok letting go of the Android TV requirement, you can just get a PC with no wireless and stream from that. Maybe find a media center kind of launcher to give it a better integrated feel.

Maybe the apartment complex is called, "Faraday Heights?"🤔

This has ethernet port on back, so you won't need Wifi. To get around the remote that comes with it using bluetooth, unpair the remote and use any universal remote to control the box via IR.

Use a raspberry compute module without Bluetooth or WiFi and install an Android ROM on it.

get any android box, disable bluetooth broadcast via adb, wrap it with aluminium foil, wrap it well. should work

Use a shield tv

Thank you all for the suggestions.

As I see it, one possible route is to build a box using a Raspberry pi. There are instructions online, although they seem rather complex and it has been a very, very long time since I did this type of work.

A second approach seems to be using mini-PC running Windows. I know that Windows supports airplane mode which turns off WiFi and Bluetooth (I count on that for my work laptop) and I assume the mini-PC hardware would also support this. As far as I can tell, I can access the streaming services on the mini-PC although the interface may be a little clunky. I can also experiment with an IR mouse. I was hoping for a little more out-of-the-box solution, but that seems not to be possible.

Finally, I can try to put the Roku in a Faraday cage and hope the mesh is transparent enough to let the IR remote work. (Wrapping in foil works great for shielding, but plays havoc with cooling and definitely blocks the IR remote.)

I guess I will start with the least expensive solutions first and work my way up. Its pretty easy to tell if we fail to solve the problem.
