Any way to reset an Android TV dongle without the remote?

by LordWoodyMushrome

I've acquired an Android TV dongle (actually from an Epson projector originally so not an off the shelf one but seems to just run the standard OS) which has been set up but not paired to the remote it came with. I'm trying to find a way to either re-pair the remote to it, or reset the dongle so it goes back to the initial setup screen so I can pair it there.

I cannot use the Google TV app as it isn't connected to a wifi network either. I even tried downloading the old android TV remote apk and connecting over Bluetooth, this does work but I can't press the "ok" button to confirm the pairing. Puttng the remote itself into pairing mode just times out since the dongle isn't trying to look for any remotes. There are no buttons on the dongle externally and none hidden inside the casing either.

I'm pretty sure this thing is a brick at this point but it would be a shame if a perfectly usable device like this was useless just because of a remote pairing issue. Anything else I can try? Any chance of maybe hooking it up to a PC and using ADB or something?

2 ideas -

  1. Does the remote have a hidden reset or pairing button in the battery door?

  2. You could get a USB OTG adapter and use it to plug in a mouse or keyboard.

Sometimes Hdmi-Cec is enabled by default for most of ATV devices. If you have HDMI-CEC supported TV, you can check if TV remote is directly able to control your dongle.
