Do all Android TV boxes run all apps/have the play store? New to AndroidTV (Roku user)

by 11ej25

As the title says. I have a few apps that run videos internally (can't cast) and also a few other apps (games, flashcard apps, etc) that I want to run on my TV.

I have a Craig Android stick from wayyyy back but it is really slow since it is running an old version of android (4.1)

Any suggestions? Do all Android TV boxes have the Play store?

All certified android tv boxes have the Google play store, if money is not a problem I would go for the nvidia shield tv pro or nvidia shield tv, if on a tight budget I would go for chromecast with google tv, there is a lot of android tv boxes or tv sticks out there.

I wonder why you deleted your previous post...

Do all Android TV boxes have the Play store?

The Play Store in Android TV boxes, sticks and televisions run a version with TV apps only so you won't find the full mobile Play Store BUT if you need to use an specific mobile app without a TV conterpart then you can sideload it but you'll need to use a mouse to move around the interface.

There are Android TV boxes (running the Android TV operating system , licensed by Google), what this sub is actually about, and there are TV boxes with Android (usually running Android Open Source Project with some weird skin on top). The former are often marketed by better-known brands (Google itself, Nvidia, Nokia, Walmart/Onn, Anker, mobile phone/cable companies etc.), the latter exclusively by lesser-known Chinese companies.

Real Android TV boxes run all apps (except, sometimes, Netflix, which runs only on Netflix-certified devices), have a UI optimized for a remote control, have Google Assistant and Play Store (this Play Store is limited to TV-optimized apps). For apps not available in the Play Store for TV, you need sideloading.

The other kind of boxes sometimes have a phone-optimized Play Store, or use some third-party app store (sometimes shady), the remote-control optimization may be good, may be bad, may be non-existent. Still, you can usually always sideload things to these.
