Onn device very unstable

by AardvarkRatnik

Hi

Bought an Onn Android device for streaming from apps on my TV. Mainly because it was spoken of mostly in positive terms.

Device itself is quick and responsive and does what I expected.

But my device hangs or reboots daily, especially after not using for many hours, as I'm at work.

When I get home, choice Netflix, Plex or whatever app for streaming, it will work for like 3-5 minutes, and then reboots by itself. Sometimes it will not reboot, it just hangs. The LED turns off and there is no other way than remove power to wake it again.

Has anybody similar experiences?

I have switch the power cable and wall plug several times, as i don't use the original one, as i'm in Europe.

No issues with my current 4k box. Runs great

You write "onn device." Do you have the 4k or 2k stick?

I'm having problems, too, and recently.

I purchased onn android TV 2k FHD (not 4K) streaming device circa july 19 2022. It was working fine. On about 8/12/2022, problems started. The initial problem was it would not maintain a wifi connection. It would say wifi is "connected," but the apps youtube, peacock, and YTTV, would show a spinner then eventually give the message "Whoops, something went wrong." This has got to be the most unhelpful and downright insulting diagnostic I've ever personally witnessed.

On 8/15/2022, it got better. All I did was unplug it, and have it removed from the HDMI connector (previous power cycles alone didn't help), and held in my hand while on hold with tech support. Never got through. Then, when plugged back in, is started working. Almost. Now, I'm getting more frequent buffering issues. But it has only been a day.

Ambient is 77 F, as I've seen a thread about overheating, but perhaps that was the 4k device. In USA, using provided power supply.

The only thing I can think of is they pushed a buggy fw update, and subsequently got it corrected, all without me knowing. This 2k device is now at firmware version 9.2.29. Upon initial deployment, I saw it auto-updated itself at first poweron, so I know it has this capability.

I also have a chromecast with google tv at same location. I got the onn 2k device as my 2nd streaming device because it is cheaper and the remote is not misshapen. The CWGTV device has been working flawlessly this entire time, on the same wifi network and using the same internet connection. ~

Most likely it's not the device itself. Depending on where u live when people get on at certain times of the day your wifi will lag. Cable wifi is not guaranteed to be lag free.

I only use the 4k Onn box, as the reviews for the cheaper 2k Stick we're quite negative on YouTube. My Onn box is stable, snappy and working well. USA 👍

I run the 4K Onn box yes.

I work as i wireless engineer, so my wireless is quite fine i would like to think. No other device complains about the wifi. And wifi should not make the device reboot or hang in my opinion.

I have several Chromecasts and the Xiaomi Mi Box S4K, and none of those complain about the wifi etc.

I have switch back to the Xiaomi device and it works flawlessly, might just scrap this Onn device as it's very annoying at the moment.

I do have 3 of the Onn 4k devices and they haven't had any issues. You did mention using different power supplies and I'm guessing it may be a power issue to your device or it may be overheating somehow

Unlike Chromecast TV, my ONN 4K does not have an option to connect to an already paired BT device like Airpods. if I use my Airpods on my phone and want to switch back to ONN, then I have to unpair and re-pair or add it again as a BT accessory. This sucks. Even Tizen OS has a connect option for the list of BT devices already paired. How do we get ONN to fix this problem?
