Tried a few radio players but most seem to be for phone and not really usable using just a remote.

TuneIn is pretty good but it no longer has the (USA) Audacity stations on it. Apart from that it is probably the most comprehensive.
For people in the UK I always recommend Radio Player.

I use Tunein ever since their first versions on Android 2.x and now they support ATV and Fire Tv (the latter has a way better interface) and Mytuner radio, which has some stations not available on Tunein such as the Heart stations from the UK.
I think vradio is really a good app, extensive settings and i think the best part is: you can click home button and it keeps playing on the background, also it's really fast comparing to others
On Android TV I've only seen 4 popular Radio apps:
TuneIn
MyTuner Radio
Radioline
Radio FM
There must be other local radio apps depending on your location, look for them directly in the Android TV Play Store.
