Should AV1 support be considered when purchasing new Android Box

by chudzac1991

Would having a Android Box with AV1 be future proofing?

My plan was always to sell my 2019 Shield TV Pro and replace it with something with at least feature parity and AV1, when such a device is released.

I haven't kept up with new hardware, and I see you are considering the Homatics Box R 4K Plus. Not sure if this is such a device yet, but I'm curious. I'll check out reviews once it is released.

Probably not, although AV1 support usually comes with better processors and specs, so consider it as a whole. I wouldn't spend more than, say, 30€ just because it has AV1. When the time it is required for something arrives, you may just get a new box for that price.

I would find other features like Bluetooth LE Audio support more interesting for low latency wireless headsets. But there's none I'm aware of yet.

Yup because it will be next good thing after h265.

Yes, it would, if you are one of those who look after their devices, and use them a good few years. Also, devices with AV1 tend to be a bit snappier than those that don't have it.

How does AV1 compare with H265 ,is it still HDR compatible?.tia

Definitely! AV1 is great.

Look for a box with Amlogic Soc S905X4, S905Y4 or S905W2. Also recommended to have 4 GB of RAM. I paid around 50 euros for mine.
