Goal: Multiple TVs in the house playing the same Youtube videos in sync over WiFi

by Sasquatchlicious

Hello,

I am hopeful that you knowledgeable experts will have some advice for what I should do in my situation.

  • I would like to have 4 TVs that can play the same Youtube video in sync through a WiFi network.

  • I have two existing TVs, which do not have AndroidTV. If it is possible to just add a chromecast to them, that is what I would prefer. I can purchase all TVs new if required for integrated AndroidTV.

  • I would prefer to use a WiFi connected laptop to control the Youtube videos. I have an iphone, if a phone must be used to accomplish this. I am open to buying an Android tablet if that is also required.

Can I utilize AndroidTV to accomplish what I have described above? If not, do you have any suggestions that would work wirelessly?

Any help and advice is greatly appreciated!

Thank you for your time,

-Sasquatch

I don’t know how to accomplish this, but one question that may be relevant for those with ideas:

Do you want them approximately in sync (say within 1/4 second) so it feels in sync when you walk between rooms, or do you need it exactly in sync, like because there’s audio that can be heard from multiple rooms?

Use some screen broadcasting software to cast from a central computer and then receive using VLC for Android.

If your Wi-fi don't have trouble with multi-cast then should be able to stream HD images to any number of receivers.

Just out of sheer curiosity, WHY are you trying to do this?

Yes you can add Chromecast or other devices to your non smart TVs. As far as syncing video, there may be some kind of special devices out there that can do it but it's not natively capable. You can make speaker groups for audio from YouTube but not to my knowledge video.

old school - broadcast TV from a PC or chromebook that is playing the video. then, tune in on each TV. There are cheap broadcasters on ebay and legal 100 mW should just about cover the house (no bandwidth issues).

variation on a theme - set up broadcast streaming from a PC or chromebook. then, tune in on each TV (but will use a lot of WiFi bandwidth)

I would love something like this. Even not exactly in sync this would be a great feature.

But unfortunately, there is no universal software-only solution to synchronize Android TV devices with each other.

You can get a hardware solution to mirror one device to multiple others. Might have issues with HDCP, but that's not an issue with YouTube.

Might be able to stream video from a PC.

Some video services have "party mode" or something similar, but I think that is a more course sync than you would need for audio to not be awful.
