Using the Onn Android 4K with USB Drives via a microUSB OTG hub

by martinkem

I seem to be having some issues using the Onn 4k with this three port microUSB OTG Hub. The Onn 4k restarts frequently when connected to the hub via OTG and the USB drives shows up as safely ejected when viewed in Device Preferences > Storage.

Is anyone on here using their Onn 4K with a USB Drive? If you're, how is it working for you? Could you give me a few pointers on how to go about fixing my issues with it.

What's the rating of your power adapter? FWIW, it might not have enough juice to power both the Onn and the hub together.

Try using an adapter that is 5V 3A. Usually a Raspberry Pi B power adapter would suffice, since it also needs a fair amount of power as well

What sort of usb drives are you using with that hub? Any spinning drives?

I have that hub and took it apart. The mode switch doesn't merely short out the otg pin, it is wired into a more complex circuit. Anyway, this hub would only work with flash drives, and even then it was flakey. If I used a higher amp power supply, it went even more crazy.

My solution was to just use a simple otg cable that has no circuits or switches (but only one port), and then to put a separate hub after that.

I'm using this OTG adaptor with this flash drive and mine also restarts when going hard:

I added this fan since I thought it was an overheating issue:

It restarts less often but still does when I'm really stressing it. I ordered this power supply today based on the other response in this thread:

So I'm here to +1 your issue and hope someone has our solution.

9V/2A minimum. And more importantly, plug directly into wall...
