Onn Android box disconnects remote frequently

by smartharty7

My Onn Android TV box has been really good. But over the last month or so, the remote frequently disconnects or the remote buttons to control my TV have to be reprogrammed. I have also noticed the android box getting hot.

Any recommendations? I wonder what caused this to start suddenly over the last month...

Had the same issue and all I did was replace the batteries with brand new ones. The ones that come in the box are cheap and don’t last that long. Changing them fixed my problem.

Heres the deal.. I got one of these to use in place of the generic asian made stuff I've used for years as the users for this setup were just not ready for the interface of those boxes...

Worked great for about 9 months or so... then started this BS, the remote would work fine, 5 minutes later nope....

I took a brand new one out of the box put on the same setup, same location, has worked fine since then. Its in the same spot it was with the other one.. All updates were done to both...

So move to a few days ago, and this onn box is sitting on my workbench ...plug it in to a different TV, starts up fine... 5 minutes or so remote no longer works. Unplug, replug, restart, same thing 5 minutes no remote...You can do the dance with the re-pair of the remote, 99% of time it won't do it, till it sits for 15-20 minutes... so I decide to do something that I've seen mentioned here before...cool it down...

I happen to have a USB powered fan that is for another project, so I take that, wire wrap it to the box... and Voila! no more remote disconnects!

This is 100% a heat issue, and honestly I think its from a firmware update that affects some hardware differently for some reason... No I have no proof other than.. the remote issue started not too soon after one of the updates that appeared... and then the remote issues started.

Want to accept it or not, this is a heat issue as putting a USB fan on mine, solved it 100%, its run for days and days now with no issues.

I am going to get some more of these USB fans to put on the main unit as preventative action to stop the issue from developing there... I also plan to keep my stash of spares handy and ready with firmware updates completed...

So find a small fan and put on it and if that cures the remote issue, you've found the solution. It needs cooling.

I might look into some sort of other case to remount it into with a fan, at a later date... but for now... my fan solution seems to hold that this is a heat issue, and I believe related to a firmware udpate for some reason.

Overheating is maybe the problem maybe not. I checked everything. I found out that wifi+Bluetooth chip(chips name "8822cs") causes .. I have FACTORY resetted, drilled the box to cool it, used without the case etc....

You probably moved the box too close to a heat source or added a new source of heat near it. Keep it cool by any means necessary. Don't let it sit in a place with no air or next to other electronics.

I lost one because of this issue. I'm not sure if it's a hardware defect or something they broke in an update. If your tv has CEC you can try to use its remote or the phone app.
