im looking for a good android tv box that i can root, has usb 2+3 , hdmi, and mmc slot in Canada. i want something for my mother to easily watch movies on from a usb stick ( in vlc or whatever).
it would be nice if it had custom rom support, but i understand that might be asking a lot. android 9-11 preferably. preferably something that does not crash every day also.

thanks for any info.

There are no custom Android TV roms. It's not a thing.

If you want to install a custom rom out of the box, pick from the custom rom list of supported devices; not the other way around.

Nvidia provides pre-rooted images, and supports custom roms like LineageOS, but those will be vanilla Android roms; not Android TV ones. Meaning navigation with mouse/keyboard rather than with a remote.

Is netflix certification important to you (or your mom)?

The choices with usb2+3 and a microsd slot are considerably fewer if you (or your mom) also want a netflix certified device.

Buy a Onn Android box, add Tivimate

MrKaon

Buy any Android TV box (New Google TV , I recommend) install r/Stremio and buy her Real-Debrid sub so she can watch whatever she wants in the highest quality possible.

Forget about root and custom ROMs you don't need any of those garbage.

Out of Curiosity OP, why are you looking for one to root? I always buy the same (rooted or rootable), as I enjoy messing around with custom roms, and privatising my experience as much as possible. I'm guessing you don't really care about Netflix certs etc. either?

I have the A95X F3 Air, whuch I find great. I have Stremio and Tivimate on it, I don't really find any need for anything else, but have a few other apps to fill up empy spaces. I use a TV launcher with custom launcher icons. It works out much easier for mother and aunt to use too. They found the Firestick far too messy to navigate, and they're not fond of the AndroidTV interface either.

I more recently bought the A95X F3 Air II - I have had wifi issues with one of them, but not the other, and I have already found a few firmwares for it, including an AndroidTV rom, but overall I prefer the A95X F3 Air - even though it has gone up about €15 on geekbuying, there is probably a code to knock it down a fair bit (about €37 is normal) around somewhere. (EDITED TO ADD THERE ARE CODES ON THE COUPON SECTION OF THE SITE TO DROP THE PRICES)

You can of course use the same launchers on chromecast, ONN box etc. But recording from Tivimate or downloading etc. to external requires an adaptor. Shield is great, but best if you need something that powerful (in most cases, you don't) or expensive. The X96 Max Plus is another box with decent hardware and a load of roms for around €33. Add external storage to either box via MicroSD or USB for recording or downloading to.

My question for this is always why do you need it Rooted?

What exactly do you hope to gain on an Android TV device with root access?.

You could always get a Raspberry Pi and install Android TV on it. Depending on how much patience you have for setting up such things.

It's been a while since I tried this, but the installation itself was fairly easy when I did it. Only issue I had was trying to pair the device with the bluetooth remote leftover from my dead Mecool Android TV box.

Darkstar1878

The Mecool KM2 Plus allows root unlocking. It should do what looking for in a box.

I can recommend the mecool km6 deluxe edition its is on the same level as the nvidia shield

I just found this at you tube, you might want to check it out regarding TOX3 Android tv box with 4GB RAM. Looks like what you want.
