I can't add subtitles to a casted movie - TV isn't recognizing .srt file (Sony KD-65A9G / A9G smart TV)

Hey everyone,

I have a Sony KD-65A9G / A9G smart TV.

What I want to do is cast a movie I have on my laptop to my TV, with subtitles.

I can cast the movie I want to watch without any problems, but the .srt file isn't recognized for some reason.

The .srt file is in the same folder as the movie, and has the exact same name as the movie file.

The movie is .mp4.

I'm using Windows Media Player to cast the movie.

To be clear, after I cast the movie I want to watch, I press "select" on the remote control.

Then I go to the farthest right in the menu that pops up where there are three dots ("...").

I press "select again".

The "subtitles" option is greyed out.

I've tried casting using VLC, but had the same problem.

How can I get my TV to recognize the .srt file?

Casting and subtitles don't go well together unfortunately. You better can better make a file share in windows and put the MP4 and srt in there and play it on the TV with a network share capable player like VLC or Kodi.

Some tv’s recognize srt’s, but are very strict I about the file specifications. An error in formatting might be cause for file to be completely be ignored. Text encoding must be windows-1252/cp-1252 in contrary to UTF8 or UTF16.

It might be easier to cast your whole screen to your tv. Google chrome also offers “cast desktop” as an option
