State of Framerate Matching on Android TV / CCwGTV

by wewewi

Platform-agnostic outlet FlatpanelsHD recently took the OG CCwGTV4K running the newly released ATV12 for a spin and surprisingly enough, they absolutely nailed it.

I won't sugar coat it; it's not pretty to look at. Here's their conclusion:

"Google's new feature is disappointing and we fear that it will take years to get all of the major streaming services onboard. As a result, we still recommend Apple TV 4K if you want proper video playback without judder across streaming apps."

Android TV management is utterly inept. Say what you will about Phil Harrison, but ATVs head of division is doing even better at sabotaging an entire platform.

Let it sink for a moment: Google's tv-streaming-centric, ad-filled OS that's on its SEVENTH major iteration is still not competent at properly streaming content on a tv.

YIKES.

I'm a bit of a fanboy, so it stings. =S

Sorry, I didn't know it was locked, I'm using my phone and the app is a little confusing.

Not betting on this feature arriving in a usable state on the platform anytime soon ... Kodi handles most of my streaming just fine with the integrated frame rate switching, Moonlight and Geforce Now work perfectly with the default 60 Hz and Netflix is set to a fixed 23.976 Hz with Refresh Rate. For the few cases this doesn't cover, manually adjusting the refresh rate does the trick; didn't have to do that at all in recent months though.

Crazy how Fire TV's have had solid auto frame rate switching features for years and the OS is based on Android, what are Amazon doing different that Google can't even do with it's own OS.

It's horrible, framerate switching doesn't happen with everything I use.

Apple TV is by far still the best streamer.

I’m staying on 8.2.3 on my Shield Pro forever. Shit just works.
