Can ONN Box read NTFS USB drive?

by love_warrior

I purchased an OTG USB hub with power passthrough to add external storage to the ONN Box.

Despite other posts indicating this device reads NTFS drives no problem, I can't for the life of me get it to work. I've tried a 256MB flash drive and a 1TB external drive with no luck on NTFS or exFat. It registers the drives in storage but I get a notification that it's an unsupported format and I can't access its contents. I've toggled USB debugging and installed apps like MLUSB Mounter to no avail.

The only thing that has worked is formatting to FAT32, which is useless for me due to the file size limit.

How are there posts claiming this works while others like myself can't get it to work? Does this box read NTFS drives or not?

You're correct. I just tried a WD Elements 500GB spinning drive formatted to ntfs, and it doesn't currently work. OS reports "issue with WD usb drive" (or something like that) and then in settings->storage, it lists "safely ejected".

It really did once work. I also remember ntfs/exfat working on the similar dynalink device as well. Later today I will check the dynalink too to see if it still works.

I've saved all of the previous firmware for the onn. When I have a chance, I will flash the old versions in order to find out when ntfs/exfat support was removed.

It worked the last time I tried it (around 6-9 months ago). Unless an ota update took it away.

I will check it again now and reply again shortly.

Limited to FAT32 as far as I know, and within that I've had some compatibility issues while trying several USB thumb drives. Kingston and Sandisk seem to work well, fire right up - instantly recognized. Others not so much.

Not sure if this would help but under the developer section is the option 'select USB configuration'. One of the options is MTP (Media Transfer Protocol).
