Non-Smart Television Androidbox

by Duraken

I am getting a non-smart television. I want to be able to watch my streaming services (Disney+, Netflix, and Amazon Prime) and surf Youtube without ads. through the use of an Adblocker. Is there any Android/Roku box that has what I need?

If you want YouTube without ads, definitely do NOT want Roku, since there is no way to block those ads, or any sort of adblocker at all for Roku devices. If you have a PiHole or some other network adblocking solution, you would be able to remove ads from most other apps.

With android TV you could get "alternative" YouTube clients like SmartTube Next , and you can always use an app like Blokada on the device, if the network adblocking solutions won't work for you, for whatever reasons.

Android TV devices range from the impossibly cheap - the ONN box at WalMart for about $20 to the ridiculously overpriced NVidia Shield which is $200 last I checked. Probably worse with all this recent inflation. I'd go with the cheap option just to try things out. You could always upgrade devices later if you like what you see.

I miss the days of a "dumb" TV. I'm at a point where I just want a TV to display really good images but leave the delivery of that image up to me. I don't want your weird implementation of Roku TV or Android TV at all thank you. Just display what the HDMI tells you to and move on.

Oh wait. Ya. I hear Onn is great. I'll be getting another Nvidia Shield for my projector setup soon, but it's 99% because the electronics are behind a wall and I don't want anything IR (maybe Onn isn't IR but I don't know). Our other Higher TV with Chromecast is also quite good. And frankly way cheaper, maybe I'll try that for the projector. Just needs to support everything 4k and Dolby stuff and I'll be happy.

Look up smartube. It's a youtube app that plays videos with ad and sponsor blocking. You can download the apk and side-load it into whatever box you get :)
