is there any way to get webcams working with DUO for android TV a over 480p?

by aross1976

I have installed duo and connected a logitec c920s pro to my mi box 3 (US)

the problem is that that the cam has no better resolution than the old 720 logitec golf ball cam I picked out of the Best Buy E cycle bin. Both cams work and both cams have the same potato resolution, when I go into options there are a whopping 2 choices for cam resolution, 480 and you guessed it , 480!

I also have a CC with Google TV 4k , and a tivo stream but I have not tested it with those yet ,but I am assuming it will be similar results, also I have not tested it in a few months, maybe 5 or 6

so I am asking if there is any work around to get cam resolution above 480, is there a way to install camera drivers that support 720 or 1080 to the android TV box itself or maybe by sideloading the phone version of duo ?

this is really just ridiculous that they would even release such utter trash

even the shittiest of phones from 8 years ago can make duo calls at a decent resolution

The Duo app (soon the Meet app) on Android TV and computers doesn't seem to be optimized for using a resolution higher than 720p with webcams different than Logitech, I can confirm that a Logitech C270 picked the 720p resolution while I was on a videocall with a relative that uses that model, but other models seem to be limited to 480 pixels.

If you are talking about the preview that you see when you open the app, that indeed seems to be limited to 480 pixels regardless the webcam.

Here's to hope the new Meet app for Android TV comes better optimized to use any kind of webcam and not only Logitech ones.

I have been looking for a solution for this problem since a while. It looks like for higher resolutions, manufacturers need to implement something specific and only certain cameras will work. Sony for example has a list for their TVs supporting only certain models and cameras. The shame is on google because they don't tell anybody about that issue.

I gave up on Duo and moved on to Trueconf which works with 1080p on my Mi Box S and C920 camera. They had a microphone bug after an update and they fixed it quickly after opening a ticket with them. I was impressed!

Why not just get a cheap android phone with a good camera, and mirror it to the chromecast? Then have that be your dedicated DUO calling setup.
