Onn 4K Streaming Box overheating fix!

by fc528e

I think fix is a stretch and this started as a joke because the box was basically useless after 30 minutes since the remote would be unresponsive. Had this sitting in my basement for 6 months doing nothing until a FireTV Stick 4K died in our guest room.

I popped it out of the case, and just put little stand offs all the way around. Then put it between the shell to keep it off the TV stand and from anyone touching hot parts.

Hilarious to me but totally solved the overheating with passive cooling.

There must be dozens of thousands of Onn players like this in the wild, plus about a dozen more devices all using the same SEI Robotics design, including Google's own ADT-3.

If there was any overheating issue, we would know.

Another fix: Return it!

Looks like the heatsink is separating from the metal below it a bit, especially as you look to the right. Wonder if that's causing some of your issue? Might just be the picture, I'm no expert by any means.

Man, the aluminum heatsink is not perfect touch the metal plate. I think this why your Onn overheating.

jubazito

that's a pearl of architecture right there, my wife would fill for divorce if i did something like that and any court of law would give her reason!!!

This is what you want!!!

Never had an overheating issue but I've seen a few other guys say they fixed their issue by putting it on a heatsink or something that acts like a heatsink like a big piece of metal or stone.

This looks awesome! Kudos to you mate!!.. Though I do feel bad some of you mates are having heating issues with it. I literally use it on a daily basis and heavenly any issue with mine. Just the remote issue but a new pair of batteries fixed it. Maybe I lucked out. But it’s so cool to see ideas like this!! 👍👍 Pretty damn cool!!

Did you try with just the cover off?

Wasn't there a problem with the original power adapter on the early models? I use a Roku power adapter on mine and they have never overheated.

Later you will install a proper radiator with water cooling, right?

Did the firetv stick 4k also die of heat? Maybe your house is just really hot. If it's airbnb guests that are staying in your guest room, maybe they are turning up the thermostat.

androidloyal

how are yall making this overheat

pawdog

Mine don't overheat but I Iike the look.

With the remote being unresponsive I found for me it only happens when CEC is enabled

Omg this is absolutely amazing I have had the same issue and even made a post about it a couple days ago!

I was experimenting and right now I have mine dangling in its cubby being blown on by a distant fan. It didn’t fully solve it for me but it definitely is better my next step is to Frankenstein a couple new heat sinks on them and the Bluetooth module.

Hoping to keep messing it within the next couple weeks so I’ll give you an update if you’d like on my solution.
