External USB storage issue after update to Android 12

by icovelev

Long story short my CCwGTV updated itself to A12 and now after a reboot, the apps that are installed on the external usb drive are not visible on the Home Screen. It takes about 2-3 minutes for the usb drive to reconnect automatically and then I have to force stop the google tv launcher, so the apps to reappear again, but not in the same places as before. I tried to resolve the problem by moving the apps to internal storage after that reformatting the usb drive and moving the apps back, but the issue is still here. I tried another usb drive and sd card as well, factory reseting the device didn't help either. Initially after the update the device was basically trash - laggy and unresponsive, now after the reset it's a bit better, but this thing with the reconnecting of the external storage is really frustrating me. On Android 10, the usb was reconnected during the boot sequence and all apps were visible immediately and they were on the correct place on the Home Screen. I am open to suggestions, on potential ways for fixing this.

The last 2 AndroidTV/Google TV updates have been so weird for so many people. Some have a ton of issues with adding storage devices, others don't. Even ShieldTV users are still having weird permission issues with scoped storage.

What a headache. I returned my ChromecastTV and got an Onn 4k box for $20. I haven't connected storage yet though just using SMB share for accessing media. I'll eventually add storage though.

Not much else you can do. The update actually improved the way external works for me. Only thing you didn't mention is changing the USB Hub. Do you have another one of those to try?
