Access files from PC on Android TV

by Nyankomori

My streaming device is Mi TV Stick 4k.

I want to play the movies I have on my PC harddisk on my TV. Not mirror screens, but actually play the file on my TV.

I tried using VLC but it doesn't work.

How can I access the movie files from my PC on TV???

Nova Video Player working great!

SMB1/2/3 are supported since v5.x version of Nova!

Just share folder on Windows!

I use Serviio as a UPnP server on my PC and Kodi on Android TV. If you want to try this system, remember to enable UPnP on Kodi (it's disabled by default).

Easiest: Kodi, share the folder on your PC and add as source on the Mi TV.

A bit more involved, if you need to transcode them: Plex or Jellyfin, server on your PC, client on the Mi TV

For videos, Plex/emby/etc works. Although vlc works good automatically too. when it works, if you have a server issue, it can get annoying.

My favorite file manager is still" lonely cat x-plore." It just works. You'll need to share folders on PC still. (Might be slow to copy files over network.)

You can't mount smb to android without rooting the device. (I think)

If your device has a USB port, you should be able to use an external HDD. Go Kodi, idk if vlc can mount the HDD. But Kodi is friendly for the most part.

On your windows PC, turn off password protected filesharing and share the folder you have your movies in. On AndroidTV, install Kodi and add the movies folder as a source using SMB. Keep in mind each type of video (movies, tv) should be in a different folder and added as a separate source.
