I have a TV with a built in tuner and a Chromecast HD plugged in. I can find and store channels on the TV via the built in tuner but when I switch to the Chromecast and search in live channels it cannot find any of the tuner channels? Am I doing something wrong?

Your only shot at viewing content from the TV on the android box is via DVR - I am unsure how far in advanced it needs to record before you can view, but I'm sure you can set something up without purchasing additional equipment.
Otherwise as I mentioned in other reply you will need a network based tuner to add OTA capabilities.
You can find a USED HDHOMERUN and properly share OTA channels on any device connected to your network - the channels will display beautifully in the native channels app too! I have one and love it.
The only way how you could get the channels from your Sony TV is if it was a media server and the channels app on the chromecast could detect the channels from. They won't just pass thru HDMI.
You can also maybe setup a screenshare?

HDMI devices cannot do that. You will only be able to access the TVs built-in tuner via the TVs built-in OS.
