Border color-matching bias lighting: How to achieve on smart TV with built-in apps?

by TrashQuestion

Ive been wanting to install bias lighting on my TV for a couple years now and i'm fairly set on a DIY solution like Hyperion as i'm very comfortable with these types of projects.

One big question i'm facing now is: how the heck does it work if the content isn't delivered over HDMI? I used to have a Chromecast with Google TV which i was planning to do HDMI-split on, but now i have a TCL smart TV with Google TV built-in; so i don't use my CCwGTV anymore since all the apps it provided me are installed directly on the TV.

Is there any possible way to export the TV info so hyperion can use it to control the bias lighting?

Secondly, i remember reading that netflix content was "protected" so it couldnt be read by another app, is this still the case? Will the bias lightning never work with netflix?

The apps use now built-in to my TV are:

  • Netflix
  • Disney+
  • Hulu
  • Amazon Prime Video
  • Jellyfin (for locally hosted content)

As hacky as they strike me, the systems that use a camera aimed at the TV do solve this problem. Haven't tried any of them personally but I saw recently that Govee makes a solution like this called Envisual. Currently $90 at Amazon for 55-65" TVs.

I'd assume latency could be an issue depending on how sensitive you are to it, but it might be an acceptable trade off for something that works with anything your TV displays.

Only real solutions are to either buy an Ambilight tv if available to you or get the govee gear. Both of these setups are not affected at all by any hdcp or anything and they work on all sources, including built in apps. Personally I’ve got an Ambilight tv. Every other solution uses some sort of in line video capture which will mean it only works for external sources and will be restricted by hdcp protections or something that means it doesn’t work. I use the Hue sync app on my pc aswell for syncing some play bars and Disney plus will not allow me to sync lighting, no issues with Disney plus on my Ambilight tv though.

Anything with studio content is.

No prospect of any bias lighting solution that doesn't have HDCP working with it ever, and I one of those doesn't exist afaik.
