what do you use root for on Android TV?

by Treypopj

I root most of my android devices so obviously I rooted my Onn Android TV box. I used tasker to remapping the TV button to Sling. I haven't found much of anything else to use root for.

Run AdAway to have systemwide adblock.

And for remapping buttons, you dont even have to root the device, you just need to use tvquickactions and a laptop to run adb in command line and give accessibility permission

You can also make the system r/w and replace the home app with an older version without all the Google crap.

I am planning to root my tv, but most of the things i want to do, like remap the remote buttons, delete bloatware(pre installed appps) can be done using a laptop command line , so its not worth risking your tv just for fun

Family use the android tv and I try to keep that as stock as possible. Don't want to mod the device and make it buggy because they won't do workaround.

i don't anymore, but for the 'best' way to remap buttons, root or custom image is needed.
apps/input handlers/accessibility all have compromises.

on my adt-1 also to control the built in rgb.

Well that's a pretty hilarious start; please go on..; what's the point of rooting anything nowadays? I have genuinely no clue.
