2 weeks ago I set up a new TCL R646, and decided to not log in to a google account, and use the TV in "basic mode". This morning, I'm now getting advertisements -- though I'm still not logged in. Any way to disable these?

This is not basic mode, as basic mode has no apps . The signed out version of Google TV has always been designed to show non-targeted recommendations like this as you can see at the link below from 2020. They cannot be disabled. https://9to5google.com/2020/09/30/google-tv-apps-only-homescreen/

I expect the only difference between logged in and not logged in is if the ads are random or targeted.

Do you really not want any media content recommendations at all? What's your annoyance level from 1 to 10 with this backdrop Lord of the rings thing?

Damn... I recently saw this Basic TV option and was feeling happy that atleast Google is providing an option to opt out ads... Shortlived happiness

Just get a vpn

Even the Apps ONLY mode in the Settings, still shows these. You could take the TV off your internet, and hook up a Roku streamer.

You can always block ads on the entire LAN - I suppose it’ll work for TV boxes s well. Set up a DNS server at home and tell your router to use it. Filter out trackers and ads by using extensive lists you find by googling (I use SearX meta search engine). Here’s a recent guide:

Install and use projectivy as your launcher?

Click on the user icon on top right, go to settings and find App only mode under accounts. Then go to apps and uninstall prime, Netflix, etc.

Sorry but haha. Next time just buy TV without OS.
