GoogleTV sticks and google assistant

by an-itch-in-her-ditch

I currently use AppleTV as my streaming device, but one thing I'm not happy about is the ability to control things with Assistant. Such as things like

  • turn tv on/off
  • pause/play
  • mute/unmute
  • change YouTubeTV to CBS
  • open Plex

Although I have been able to do some of the above, it’s not natural. I guess Google and Apple aren’t playing nice with each other. I don’t want to have to say, “Ok Google, mute the AppleTV” instead of “Ok Google, mute”

Will the new GoogleTV sticks get rid of this Apple v Google head knocking?

I doubt it. Apple is the biggest obstacle to interoperability.

With my Chromecast with Google TV, one of my favorite features is being able to hit the Assistant button on the remote, not even have to say "Ok Google" and just say "mute" in a normal speaking voice instead of yelling at the nearest speaker.

Here are my answers. I have both a CCWGTV and an ONN 4k. As someone else has mentioned, if you use the voice button on the remote, you don't have to say a trigger phrase (e.g. 'Hey Google').

turn tv on/off Depends on if your TV is fully compatible. Works on my newer 4K Vizio TV, but does not work on my 10 year old Vizio

pause/play Yes (can also tell it to fast-forward/rewind by X-seconds/minutes)

mute/unmute Yes, but might depend on your sound system. It works fine on my 2 Vizio TVs.

change YouTubeTV to CBS I do not know

open Plex Yes. Also, you can launch any app by voice--even sideloaded apps like STN.

The only other thing I'd add is that as far as voice commands go, if you happen to have any of the Google Nest smart speakers, you can issue commands that way as well. You can do it via the voice assistant on an Android phone too.
