Need an 55" 4K android TV on which I can easily sideload apps (mostly VPN). What do you recommend?

If you're going to spend that much maybe go with a Sony. I think You will be better off spending less and putting a Chromecast with Google TV on it. That way you can get the best TV for your money without locking in to what OS the TV runs. Probably plenty of 55 inch sets for half that price.
The TCL series 6 have a beautiful picture.
Check out TCL, good displays mostly with Dolby Vision and not too much bloatware

And enough money to buy whatever streaming device you want... And still have money left over.
I recently found a 55 inch Panasonic tv at goodwill for 50 dollars if u don't mind having used. Checkout the hospice or goodwill stores.alot of the materials that they sell are high quality and still have alot of time in them to be used.
Absolutely 100% never ever ever ever buy a TV because of its smart capabilities. You can plug in a 35$ device that will be better than anything inside a tv and be supported for far longer. And if they stop supporting it like they will with the newest tv model within a year? Go buy the newer $35 dongle.
I'd go with the R646, from TCL, but don't buy it without an extended warranty
Hisense U8H. Check out the scores over at Rtings.com, the U8H is an amazing TV for its price. I own 3 of them in the 55" version. I actually had a TCL 6 Series and found the U8H to have a brighter and more vivid picture.
If you're willing to spend i little bit more, the Sony X900H
Obviously you want a second hand tv so check out fb market place ir Craigslist
VU is also good
I saw a convincing argument that you should not seek a smart TV and only worry about the picture it provides. A separate Android box can be updated/replaced much more easily than a TV.
