My recent experience with hotel wi-fi authentication

by lrd1

I'm US-based, but just completed a swing through central Europe, packing my Onn stick so I could access US streaming services during downtime.

Like others have reported here, I initially struggled with getting to the hotel's wi-fi authentication screen. I tried everything, including URL manipulation to substitute my (connected) phone's MAC address with the MAC from my Onn. I also tried a bunch of different browsers, even side-loading some (like Firefox Nightly) that aren't in the Play Store for this device.

I finally stumbled on something that worked. . . I loaded Odin browser from the Play Store and pointed it to a nonsensical address, like http://8.8.8.8 -- it never failed to load the sign-in screen, working at two Marriott, two IHG, and three independent hotels.

Let me know if this works for you, or if you have a better solution.

FYI 8.8.8.8 is one of Google's DNS servers.

http://neverssl.com is my goto, and it's set as a bookmark on the web browser I use ( TVBro )

Just have the front desk put you through support and ask them to connect your device as a long term stay. Sometimes the front desk can do this as well. Will take 5 minutes tops.

I’ve had good results with neverssl.com

Get a travel router, I recommend Beryl.

Login in to hotel wifi with phone. Turn phone data off and set hotspot up with any network name and password you like. Not sure which phones this works with, but have used a OnePlus 7 Pro and Samsung S10e. Worked in Europe at many hotels with laptop. Just checked here in US and works with ONN Android TV 4K UHD Streaming Device.

Just buy a mini router, have that connect to the wifi (or preferably the ethernet) and have your devices connect to it. So much easier

Solution is go to this site: clients1.google.com

Should get you to the captive wifi portal on Android.

Btw for Apple phones/Mac, it would be captive.apple.com

Odin Browser is the best browser I have found

Does this work on planes?

We use Android tv at home but when we travel, we prefer roku. They have a pretty simple way to get connected to hotel/dorm internet that requires browser sign in.

I was looking at travel routers this morning and 500mb of monthly data may not be enough and the 4g LTE connection may present an issue since many non-USA countries use CDMA, GSM and other cell protocols. Also some of the tv sets are locked down and, dont allow usb connection or screen mirroring, just usb maintenance ports without the necessary player/codec software. One hotel I stayed recently even locked the hdmi ports because they were more tech savvy and they offered pay-per-view in the room. So research before you buy a mobile router.
