Netflix with DNS services?

Does anyone know if you can change your DNS settings on Android TV and use services like unblock-us to access foreign Netflix? I know Netflix hardcoded in the Google DNS on the regular Android app, and was wondering if it was the same for Android TV. I'm interested in the platform, but it's not really worth it to me if it means being stuck with Canadian Netflix.

Also, I'm aware that this can be bypassed at a router level, but I need to use some university sites that don't work properly with the unblock-us dns, so that is not really an option.

Help Needed

Hey all,

Not sure if this is the place to ask, but my head's done in. Trying to set up my new android tv box but, stupidly, I opted for Xbmc to launch as default without actually setting up WiFi and box settings. Now it seems I can't actually get back to the 'main menu' (or whatever you'd call it) to do so, as every time I hit home / return etc. I just get a white screen for a second and then Xbmc reloads.

Any ideas?

Thanks in advance.

Razer Forge TV Thoughts/Mini-Review

From where I'm sitting, the Razer Forge TV, as a product, attempts to do three things: stream video content, provide native Android gaming, and stream PC games. I preordered it based on the idea that this box could replace what, right now, takes multiple devicies to do. Unfortunately, in varying degrees, it fails at all of them.

1 - Android TV-based Content Streaming

The Razer Forge TV technically accomplishes this, however seeing as the best content providers - including but not limited to Netflix, Amazon Prime, and HBO Go - are not natively available, I can't imagine anyone being satisfied with this as a streaming content box. The lack of an on-screen keyboard in the UI means that the Serval controller is only partially functional as a remote control for the device. Plus the functionality of the app in general is a train wreck.

2 - Android Gaming

Utilizing mid-2014 higher end mobile processing power, the Forge TV handles native Android gaming quite well. That said, the absence of an SD/Micro-SD card slot as well as the included USB drive not functioning (out of the box) as memory expansion means that you're going to run into space concerns. There's also the underlying issue that natively there just aren't a lot of great controller-focused Android games unless you look to emulation. Again, with emulation, you have the same issue as above: you can't even get ROMs onto the box without sideloading a file explorer application.

3 - PC Game Streaming

Not available at launch.

I preordered this device thinking I could upgrade one of my Chromecasts to a better streaming solution that'd also let me play some games (native Android and emulation).

I'm shipping this back to Amazon.

No idea what Razer was thinking. I can buy a low-end PC for barely more than this and get a lot more function, or pay considerably less for a much better streaming experience.

In reviewing their materials it is clear they don't mention any of the services I reference above, and they were up front that PC streaming would come later, so it isn't really that they're being underhanded here, they've just released a pointless brick of a product.

Read my full thoughts, here, if interested: http://www.voltron00x.com/?p=975

Really a shame as I wanted to like this product.

Edit: current 1.5 star average on Amazon. Ouch.

Quick Review of my Razer Forge TV (x-post from r/razer)

Pros:

  • XBMC runs great. (I had to install the APK from the website)
  • Works with both my wired and wireless usb xbox controllers.
  • Nice looking hardware.
  • Games run great

Cons:

  • No Netflix. I was able to side-load it, but no icon appeared on the menu. Someone smarter than me will get it working correctly.
  • I haven't had luck casting Netflix from my phone (was able to cast Youtube).
  • Razer's remote app isn't great. Takes too long it connect and it disconnects as soon as you leave the app (to answer a text or a screen timeout or anything).
  • Android TV isn't mature, the App selection is small.
  • No PC streaming at launch.

If you have any questions I'll do my best.

PopcornTime AndroidTV support coming soon.

As stated in their latest blog post.

I currently have the regular app sideloaded on my ADT-1 but need to use a BT mouse in conjunction with the gamepad to properly use it. Hopefully this will make it easier to navigate.

amazon instant video coming to sony bravia 4k TVs

Interesting that all the new sony bravia 4k TVs listing on sony's site indicate an amazon instant video app will be available while the non-4K TVs in the same lineup have no mention of this on their pages. Does this indicate that there might be a general androidtv app coming from amazon, or perhaps sony has paid them and their app will be locked down to just the bravia 4K line?

My (failed) experiments creating an AndroidTV HTPC

I love the Android TV interface (the leanback launcher) and the casting abilities, so I figured if I could get my (Intel based) HTPC (that currently runs Lubuntu) to boot Android x86, I could flash the Nexus Player CM Gapps package on it and get a fully functional Android TV based HTPC.

Unfortunately, so far I failed - not because of the GAPPS but because every single version of Android x86 Lollipop I tried was painstakingly slow and unresponsive. I know I can run Android 4.4 x86 form a USB on this same device, but all the Android TV packages are Lollipop based so that won't work. Also, Android x86 is officially only 4.4 so far, the Lollipop versions are all experimental and all versions I tried were slow to a halt, which I'm assuming is GPU/Kernel related as I've read they haven't integrated those yet into the nightlies.

If I could get Android 5.X running normally, the rest should be easy in theory (it's all in the gapps).

The hardware is a pretty standard PC, HP Pavillion with an Intel Core 2 Duo CPU, an Intel ICH7 chipset motherboard and an nVidia GT 630 graphics card.

Has anyone else toyed with this to some level of success? Tried it on other hardware maybe? I'd love to know if/how it works.

OTG USB drive.

Hi guys. The Nexus player came out in Australia today. I was wondering (in your personal experience with Android TV) is it is possible to use a USB drive via an OTG cable to side load apps, I have tried a file manager but the USB drive doesn't show up. If it is possible to do do I need to root the device?

Question about backlighting dynamic

Firstly thank you for stopping by to read this! I currently run Kodi on a generic android box which has been running perfectly for years. I recently bought some led RGB strips which I manually change depending on my mood. I attempted to do some research, but have come up short concerning whether I can implement a dynamic backlight with Kodi on the android platform and how I would go about it. Any help would be much appreciated. Ideally I would like to do it myself, but if I have to buy a kit then so be it.
