Android TV Question: Will it run mobile/tablet apps?

For Example:

NBC Live Extra has a decent app for android/iOS/windows 8. It allows you to watch the Premier League and many other sports in HD pretty much anywhere.

However, NBC (Comcast) have not brought their NBC live extra app to any set top box platform (Chromecast/roku/fire tv/ect).

I believe this is because they do not want people to watch over the net on the big screen when it is available through their cable TV service.

Since I can assume they won't build a android TV optimized version of NBC Live Extra will an apk for the mobile or tablet version run on the Android TV software?

Thanks! :)

Possibly another round of ADT-1 boxes being shipped

I just received mine. I signed up after a few weeks of registration being open. But I also got impatient and bought one off ebay about a month ago. Can't decide if i want to keep, sell, keep or cancel my nexus player order, etc. Odd thing was that I didn't receive a shipping notification like others have reported before, just showed up without any warning.

  • Will I be able to browse The Pirate Bay and download torrents?
  • Can I use other bluetooth gamepads and remotes or only the stock gamepad/remote work with Nexus Player?
  • Can I transfer content to the Nexus Player via USB? For example, say I have a mp4 on a USB stick, what would be the best/efficient way to be able to get it on the Nexus Player in order to watch it?
  • I am developing an Android game. Could I technically export an APK, then load it on the Nexus Player and test it on the tv?

DVR App for Android TV?

With MPEG-2 support, these devices will make excellent DVR frontends for US broadcast MPEG-2.

MythTV seems like a no-brainer. The independent backend server is a perfect companion for the Android TV frontend.

Any apps available or planned? Or, are there any other DVR backends that will work well with one of these boxes?

Is My Google TV Now Obsolete?

With the announcement of Android TV, and seeing the lack of support for existing apps and lack of enthusiasm for bringing [what should be essential] apps like HBOGO to the platform, is my TV dead?

I love my TV, it's a second generation LG Google TV. I love the fact that I can just go right into the Netflix app and watch shows. I didn't mind the price, I love being able to stream from YouTube to my TV, and it's the biggest TV I've ever owned (bought when I bought my first condo just over a year ago). I am also glad that I can plug my ethernet cable into it, instead of having to rely on Wi-Fi.

I hate the fact that I don't have access to apps like HBO Go, Showtime's app, or most other mainstream channels. It also drives me crazy that I can only cast to my TV from YouTube, no other app allows me to cast to my TV.

With the Chromecast in the bedroom, I can cast anything from my phone or table to my TV. I believe that Android TV will have this capability.

What are your thoughts guys?

Why isn't there a mic on the controller? It makes no sense to have a voice search button if there isn't a mic on the controller.

Bluetooth Speaker support for ADT-1?

I've tried pairing but the ADT-1 doesn't pick up the bluetooth speakers.

Controller won't connect to ADT-1, the leds flash on the controller for a few seconds then turns off

Have change the batteries several times to make sure that wasn't causing the issue.

Initially I paired the controller with the ADT-1 then had to turn it off from the power point when at the network selection screen after selecting a language. At that point there wasn't an issue at all, just needed to change HDMI ports.

Now when I turn the ADT-1 on the controller won't pair. I read somewhere that an update causes an issue but it couldn't have updated as I never entered a WiFi password.

Tried doing a hardware reset but no luck.

Got my AndroidTV Dev Kit today!

A long way back, during Google I/O, there was an option for developers to register to get an Android TV Dev Kit. I had long forgotten, until all of a sudden FedEx showed up with one for me. Thanks Google, I will start developing as soon as I can come up with some ideas!

Are we ever getting Android TV?

I had thought early fall was the release date for the new Android TV set top boxes. There is still no real word or updates, and hasn't been much of anything in the way of news since Google I/O.

Why can't Google just license content from major networks and make it all available in the Play Store.. but in a typical "set top box" UI?

Google's obviously hellbent on taking over the living room, but a VAST majority of non-tech people I talk to are comfortable with their cable or satellite box, and are intimidated by "internet content"

My parents will set a DVR schedule to record a movie that's going to be on next week, when they could just watch it now on Netflix on their smart tv.

If cable and satellite providors, and hulu, and other outlets license current..let's call it "live" programming, then why can't Google create a "live" app, that's nothing more than a program guide, like we're all used to seeing on our set top boxes for years.. Users could scroll through the "channel guide" and the program would play, relative to the current time.. for instance, say Conan started at 9:00pm, it's 9:15. User could scroll down to TBS, select the program, and it would instantly start playing at 00:15:00 with a soft transparent popover asking the user if they'd like to start from the beginning, if not, popover fades, users watching the show.

While this seems like a ridiculous, counter intuitive way to stream video, it would be a simple, comforting interface that all tv viewers would understand, and could allow Google to break in to every living room in America.

Since programming is only available on a timed schedule, Google could even implement a "DVR" style interface that would allow users to "record" future events.. except instead of actually "recording" the program, it would simply wait until it's scheduled broadcast time, when it would just add the title to a "playlist" if you will... which would be similar to the current DVR recorded shows list. When the user picks a show, it starts to stream (since it's a historic show at that point).

Honestly, the only reason I haven't cut the cable yet is because while google play, netflix, hulu are all great things, I'd miss channel surfing, plus I enjoy local stations, and sporting events (mainly formula1 and other soccer games)

Anybody else get a Dev unit?

Just got one. I side loaded chrome and couldn't get out of the EULA text box to select "accept". There's no cursor like the Google TV. Installed chrome beta and was able to accept the EULA but again, no cursor, so I can't seem to select the omni box to type in a URL.

Side loaded an NES emulator and it opened a web page in chrome beta but I couldn't select anything. I try to play a game on it and it FCs right away.

Side loaded apps aren't displayed on the launcher, I have to go to settings, apps and open them from there.

Currently in the play store there are 4 apps: TED, Netflix, Plex and I heart radio. But there are about 20 games.

I installed Leo's fortune, which was demoed on android TV at io. At first launch it tells me I need to update Google play services, which opened up the play store and gave me the option to update. Went back into the game yet every time I attempt to log in to Google play games, it tells me Google play services needs to be updated. Other that that, the game runs smoothly and graphics are really good.

Overall it runs smooth. Hoping Google doesn't drop the ball on this like they did with GoogleTV.

Edit: I just paired a Bluetooth mouse and have a cursor now, chrome beta is working and loading pages just fine, even ones with ads (on Google TV's chrome pages with ads would cause chrome to go really slow and even crash).

Any release dates known for standalone devices?

I'm interested in checking out an AndroidTV box as a consolidated streamer (Netflix, Amazon Video, DVR frontend, local music/video). But, I haven't seen any firm release plans.

The main reason I'm interested in AndroidTV is for the MPEG2 playback. Many other devices can do Netflix, Amazon, HBO, etc. But surprisingly few can support the huge amount of content from US broadcast TV. Will all devices support MPEG2, or will it be a research project to map out capabilities like with the Google TV boxes?
