Mi box wifi

Recently bought 2 Mi boxes to replace 2 older units that couldnt update to kodi 17.1.

Since I got the Mi boxes, I've had no end of wifi connection problems.

I use a subscrption iptv service which now constantly buffers, and addons like exodus are similar.

Can anyone offer any advice?

Let's talk about the new Android TV launcher

I think that probably everyone here have already seen the presentation of the new launcher, so I would like to open a discussion about it.

What do You think is an improvement compared to the old Leanback Launcher? What changes do You disapprove? What features would You like to see in the final version? How can new launcher change the way You use your Android TV? and the biggest question of all - do You think that those changes are the steps in the right direction?

Android TV Remote - Seeking Perfection for Shield/Nexus

Many are close, yet the perfect AndroidTV remote control remains elusive.

My main system is a Shield TV 2015, and my spare room is a Nexus player for guests. Each box is a comprehensive and self-contained media centre, with Live channels+HD Homerun, a nice selection of retro games, full subs to amazon prime/netflix/crunchyroll/play music etc, and a nicely set up version of kodi. I have no other devices like a cable box or console, it's only the AndroidTV devices and TVs that need to be dealt with.

What I want is for both devices to be easy for anyone to use, with only a single remote needed for all important functions.

I just cannot get a remote solution I am happy with. I find this strange, as the following criteria for perfection are surely shared by many others:

  1. Minimal Design. The quantity of buttons on the shield remote and nexus remote is (almost) sufficient. Forward/backward/play buttons like on the Fire TV remotes is also fine. I do not need numbers, coloured buttons, DEFINITELY not an air mouse, etc. Third party remotes generally have a ton of this stuff, aimed at cheap generic android boxes. Clutter makes the remote ugly, and most importantly confusing to someone unfamiliar with the system. Harmony remotes, although very nice, are not perfect for this reason.

  2. Voice Control. This is hugely problematic - essentially, only the nexus/fire/shield/mii remotes can use voice. This more than anything else limits the controls I can use. I tried a third party remote with voice, but it doesn't really work well. Could the forthcoming Spot contribute to overcoming this one?

  3. Infra Red Learning for TV Power. And possibly volume also. Everyone needs to turn their TV on and off! Everyone needs to adjust volume! CEC is an absolute PITA. I don't mind controlling volume through android, but IR learning for power and volume would solve nearly everyone's problem with multiple remotes at a stroke. Even a lot of the cheap android boxes' remotes have a few IR learning keys for this. The Shield 2017 implementation appears confusing and unintuitive (though I haven't used it myself).

  4. Volume control ideally with a mute. Again, IR or through the android OS is fine. The slider on the shield is a bad design, + and - much more sensible.

That's it. Minimal Android style buttons, IR power, volume control and voice. With these things, anyone can pick up the single remote and control everything necessary with no explanation, 100%.

A quick summary of the flaws in current options:

  • Shield remote: Sub-optimal IR learning, sub-optimal volume
  • Fire TV remote: No IR learning, no volume
  • Nexus remote: No IR learning, no volume
  • Mii box remote: No IR learning
  • Generic third party/Harmony: Way too many buttons, no voice

A Sideclick remote solves the Nexus and Fire remote problems: https://www.sideclickremotes.com/

But they are very ugly, with a couple of unnecessary buttons and also uncomfortable to hold. Nevertheless, this is my choice for the spare room currently. My main room uses two remotes for the Shield and TV.

If anyone could point out a perfect remote I have overlooked I'd be forever indebted, but I think I have checked out everything.

Does anyone agree with me on this list? Is it really that esoteric?!

tl;dr - It's obvious what an ideal remote needs but it still doesn't exist.

Downgrading to previous Android version?

I have a Sony XBR65 810C that recently upgraded to 6.0.1 (or at least that's what it shows as current version) since the update, I have been experiencing some annoying bugs accros some of my most used apps. YouTube frequently stops showing or freezes the image while the sound is still playing fine. Amazon now has constant stutter making it annoying to watch any of the movies. Also they removed the duplicates from my apps list and put them on the featured apps, but there is no way to organize that section so I constantly have to pass all the useless apps I don't even have installed to find HBOnow.

The UI might be a little better but currently it's a horrible mess that's not optimized for my TV. I am looking for a way to reinstall the previous version of lollipop, since it was at least useable then. I'm not sure if it's even possible since the official Sony site warns you can't revert back but I'm hoping someone has found a way to do it anyways.

Sorry if this is an answer that is on the wiki. I'm currently only able to use mobile and the wiki doesn't load.

They have gotta get this stuff ironed out if they expect it to catch on big.

Don't get me wrong. I've been pro Android since 2008, and I still like it compared to IOS, Windows, ETC... When it works.

So today I get an email from Nvidia saying I have a .99 cent movie rental through Google Play Movies. Cool I'll pick something out with my daughter and we will watch it before bed. So we pick a movie, click on rent, click on HD, and get an error message. Ok I thought, I'll restart the Shield and it'll work. Come back and try after rebooting and get the same error. Look the error up on Google and most people are saying it was because they had no payment options set up. I had 2 credit cards and paypal setup for payment options, so I decided that wasn't it. Grab my trusty Nexus 6P and try to rent the movie from there... Get a different error, okay time to try out the live help feature in Android. Moments later I was connected with a customer service rep. After an hour of trouble shooting with the rep we got nowhere. I had uninstalled and reinstalled apps, cleared caches, cleared data, removed all payment methods and put them back in. At this point we got rid of one error but started getting a different error. Then we got to where we could rent some movies, but not others. Eventually after almost 2hrs of wasting my Friday night dicking with the Shield instead of spending time with my daughter I gave up and decided to cast the movie from my phone from an alternate source... Well it was a good idea on paper. I select the Shield to cast to and all that happens is the blank cast screen comes up, nothing ever plays. That's odd because I cast things to my Nexus Player all the time with no issues.

At this point my daughter decided she just wanted to lay down in bed and watch something as she was getting tired. Hooray! Netflix loads like a champ and she has a show playing without a hitch. About 5 mins later she calls for me. Randomly netflix closed, no force close message or anything, it just went away. So I lay down and start Netflix again, this time I hang out and sure enough about 5 mins into the show it just goes back to the home screen. Reboot the NP and now it is working.

This is typical of my experience with Android TV. I have 2 Nexus Players and a Shield TV, all of them are problematic and require some tinkering at least once a week. Tonight was just terrible though. And even after all the frustration and time wasted with tech support, never once did they at least offer me a free rental or anything like that.

I have 2 Android tablets and my phone that also have little random software gremlins. This OS is almost 10 years old IMO it still feels Beta. Every year Google has all these new features and tweaks the promise better battery life and a more stable experience. I feel like every year they give us an OS with some band aids to cover the previous years problems and some new features that might or might not work correctly.

'Old' Shield TV or New?

I'm pondering an upgrade from a FireTV .. just wondering if it's worth paying the approx 12% extra for the new model Shield TV? I'm not worried about a remote controller as I'd be using a Harmony Hub anyway. Software-capabilities-wise, the old and new look to be identical.

(I'd be looking at the 16GB model as I don't need a large-ish HDD based storage, I have a NAS for all my media.)

Google I/O Keynote YouTube - preview of new Android TV app?

I was surprised not to see this posted, so I pulled up the keynote again and took a pair of screenshots. In the YouTube section of the keynote, they had a part dedicated to viewing on TVs. They didn't specifically call this the Android TV app, but they did a live demo in this app using an Android TV remote. So take a look, but make of it what you will.

Any further development of Pure Nexus builds for ADT-1(molly)?

So, I was wondering if there's been any further development of Pure Nexus builds for the ADT-1(molly)? As far as I can see, the most recent build was from April of 2016:

I still use mine almost daily and it's still running great.

Live Channels scrolling stuck?

Hi,

I have two Mi Box'es which both run the exact same version, both system and Live Channels update. One of them works fine, the other has problems when scrolling the EPG. So the one that works correct I press middle button to bring up the EPG, which lets me scroll freely. The one that doesn't work correct, I press the middle button, and now it brings me to the left tab (All channels), I only have one source, I have to press right to get to the EPG itself. And when holding the down button to scroll down, it will let me scroll maybe 10 channels, and then I can't continue, nothing happens, I have to press right and left a couple of times and then it lets me continue.

Both boxes uses the exact same settings and sources and apps.

Any ideas?
