Quickest sideload method?

I've got Crap upload speed, so moving apks from mine phone to Google drive to then download them again to the Mi Box is a ballache... is there a quick way to just shoot the apk locally to the Mi box?

How well do Sony Android TVs perform?

Hey everyone, hoping to get some opinions on Sony Android TVs, specifically the XBR65X750D.

I currently have 2 1080p TV's, one with a Nexus Player and the other using an Nvidia Shield, so I'm all in when it comes to Android TV. I recently picked up a Vizio 4k D-series on sale, but am wondering if paying approx $500 more for the Sony X750D would be worth it. The advantages are HDR10, IPS panel and, of course, the Android TV UI.

The UI on the Vizio is atrocious, so if I stick with it I'll need to use the shield, but if I go with the Sony the shield can stay with one of the 1080p TV's. I find my Nexus player runs sluggish these days, especially compared to the shield, so my concern with the Sony is that it won't be very powerful and will have a difficult time with certain apps (like buffering large streaming files in Kodi).

Any suggestions would be appreciated!

to;dr: Sony Android TV/HDR worth an extra $500 or stick with Shield?

Anyone ever solve the Netflix Issue with the Mi Box?

I picked one up yesterday and it seems like a great little box but I'm having issues getting Netflix to play. The video will play for about 15-16 seconds and then stop with the error "We're having trouble playing this title right now. Please try again later or select a different title".

I've looked at similar threads where others have had issues and tried many of the suggested solutions but nothing has worked yet. So far I've tried:

  • Rebooting the Mi Box
  • Resetting the Mi Box
  • Updating the Mi Box
  • Resetting after updating
  • Re-installing Netflix
  • Logging out and logging back in to Netflix

The one thing I haven't tried yet is side-loading Netflix but I'll give that a shot. Has anyone found an actual fix for this issue?

What happens to the Twitch app on Android TV?

This is basically one of th reasons Ive bought a Sony with AndroidTv. It worked fine until a patch ago I think, but right now Im getting very poor quality for most of the streams, especially FPS games. Im not sure if its the app or Twitch who is limiting the the streams to 480p but its very frustrating when comparing to 1 month ago.

Anyone else experiencing this?

Voice commands for Android TV on Shield and Mi Box

Will the Nvidia Shield TV and Mi Box bring up on my televison screen the L.A. Times web site if I press the remote control's microphone button and say "Visit Los Angeles Times web site" or "Go to Yahoo-dot-com?"

The Amazon Fire TV 2 box will show the weather and bring up telephone numbers if you speak into the remote control and say "Telephone number for Dry Cleaners in zip code 65201," BUT the Fire TV will not visit web sites or do lots of other things. It doesn't work like speaking into your Android phone and saying "Visit Los Angeles Times" or "How tall is the tallest person on the planet?"

what are the best options for devices that can play hevc files?

I don't necessarily want the more expensive one. Unfortunately Amazon fire tv can't ship to my location from the amazon store.

As far as I know there is nvidia shield and amazon fire tv, what other options are there and what would you recommend?

Mi Box HDR playback

So I hooked up my Mi Box to my Vizio M series (4k HDR 120HZ). I'm on Netflix and can't seem to see the Dolby vision 5.1 mark on any of the HDR shows. Just says ultra HD 5.1. When I use the TV's native Netflix app it shows up. The Mi Box is connected to high data transfer HDMI (5 for those with the M series) input on the TV. Just curious what I am missing here?

Thanks

MiBox can't detect Wifi

I have recently purchased a mibox but I'm having some problems connecting to my home wifi. I have two routers each with a different network (and name), but for some reason the mibox can only detect and connect to one of them, unfortunately the one it is most distant to. The other network works fine with every other device I've ever used it with (including Chromecast) so I'm having a hard time understanding what's wrong. Anyone else with a similar problem?

Really poor black Friday performance

Big fan of Android TV, just wanted to say I am disappointed of the black Friday advertising for Android TV. Every other platform had a bunch of sales heavily advertised. I bet they sold millions. Hopefully a few MiBox were sold at Walmart, unfortunately the Shield was almost impossible to find other than Best Buy online only and Nvidia site (which hardly any average customers would be aware of).

Mi Box emulators performance?

So I might take advantage of black friday and get a Mi Box - but I want know how owners are finding the performance of emulators? I'm specifically looking a Retroarch (snes, n64) but I'm open to standalone emus too. Is is fast enough? Is it smooth? How's the sound?

Mi Box USB ethernet confirmed working unit

Just tested a USB ethernet dongle for my Mi Box. I can confirm this is working. Sideloaded speedtest app and on my work internet (which is gigabit), I did a speed test and had no issues. Granted it didn't get full gig speeds due to the USB 2.0 port but it was almost maxed out for 2.0 speeds.

I used a combination of these two:

https://www.amazon.com/PUREX-Technology-Dedicated-USB3-0-USB2-0/dp/B00D8JZ05A

https://www.amazon.com/TRENDnet-Ethernet-Chromebook-Specific-TU2-ET100/dp/B00007IFED/

I bought the USB hub at Microcenter for $10. Amazon's price is crazy high.

I know the port on the Mi Box is 2.0, but I plugged a USB 3.0 64GB stick in the 3.0 port and then the trendnet ethernet adapter in the 2.0 port. Using the 64GB stick for internal storage which is working great. Does not need external power.

Also for a test I tried an Apple USB Ethernet dongle which also worked. It's not hot swappable though. After plugging it in you have to restart the Mi Box.

Shield as an alarm clock / auto launching apps on start up (x-post from /r/ShieldAndroidTV)

I'd like to use my TV as an alarm (i.e. it would be cool if the TV turned on a music channel at 6am).

The problem is - I don't have a cable & the built-in feature is only capable of selecting an input the TV will start on (& switching to a particular channel if I had them).

So, is there a way to either:

  • set the Shield box to work as an alarm clock, i.e. somehow make it turn on the TV at 6am and do an action like launch an app (there are apps out there that start playing music as soon as launched so that would be sufficient).

  • if Shield itself cannot be set to work as an alarm clock - is there a way to just automatically launch an app every time it's being turned on by the TV's built-in alarm (less convenient than the 1st option as it would also start the music app every single time I turn the TV on & not just at 6am but that's not too bad I guess).

Any ideas how it can be implemented? I've seen some Dashboard apps for Android phones that may be able to do something like that (i.e. start streaming to Shield at a specific time which should be able to automatically turn the TV on) but the problem is I also don't have any Android devices other than the Shield itself.

Xiaomi Mi Box - Wi-Fi password not valid

I just got the Xiaomi Mi Box International (MDZ-16-AB) today, however I have had issues with connecting it to WiFi. No matter how many times I try to connect to my router, 2.4G or 5G, it says "Wi-Fi password not valid". I have checked very carefully that I have entered in the correct password. My router is a Netgear V7610. Every other device is able to connect to it just fine. MAC filtering on my router is off.

Things I have tried:

  • Setting password to "WPA-PSK [TKIP] + WPA2-PSK [AES]"
  • Setting password to "WPA2-PSK [AES] "
  • Disabling 5GHz and attempting to connect to 2.4GHz
  • Disabling 2.4GHz and attempting to connect to 5GHz
  • Connecting via WPS -> "Connected successfully" message, but no connection. The connection is saved but trying to connect just gives the same "Wi-Fi password not valid".
  • Disabling WPS
  • Setting the 2.4GHz radio to b/g (instead of b/g/n)
  • Setting up a guest network and trying to connect to that
  • Using a simple password = "password"

None of the above have worked. The only thing that allows it to connect is if I disable the password, but of course I can't leave my network without a password.

Strangely enough I can also connect just fine to my mobile phone hotspot with WPA2 password. I have used this to get past the setup screen and test out the features of the box, but this isn't a long term solution.

Is anyone else having trouble connecting to the WiFi with their Mi Box or other Android Box? From googling I see that some people got the same invalid-password error with various android phones, which led me to take the troubleshooting steps above.

It's looking like I have to buy a new router, which I'd rather avoid since it is fairly new, and I don't want to put in $100+ just to get my Mi Box working (every other device works fine).

EDIT: Thanks for suggestions guys. I will try them out when I get a chance.

Xiaomi Mi Box, Fire TV stick or Fire TV media player?

Uses will primarily be:

  • Netflix
  • Youtube
  • Kodi/playing media off a hard drive

I'm in Canada so I will be importing one of these and paying a bit more than the USD price but I am okay with that. Just wondering which one would be best.

I was looking to get the Xiaomi box but then the initial reviews didn't seem that great (at least the ones I read).
