Can't get Netflix to work with the Nvidia Shield

I just received my Nvidia Shield Android TV device (why, Nvidia did you decide to just name it "Nvidia Shield") and I can't seem to get Netflix to work.

Everytime I try I get one of these stupid error messages: "We're having trouble playing this title right now. Please try again later or select a different title".

I've made sure I have the latest version of the Netflix app (there was a 9.3 mb update) and it still won't work.

Anyone else encountering a similar issue?

Edit: Apparently it's a known issue! Thanks /u/drewpy_drew

AMA Request: Someone who has a new Sony Android Smart TV

I'm having a hard time finding any reviews of these things, and I'm really interested in hearing how the live TV integration works on Android TV and how similar it is to Primetime on Google TV

Questions:

  • How does live TV work on Android TV? Is it like Primetime from the Google TV boxes, where live tv shows are categorized? Can you exclude cable channels? Does it give you its own cable guide replacement? Or do you just use your cable box as normal?
  • What is the performance like?
  • Does the Android TV interface scale well to a 4k screen?

Twitch streaming on Shield - screenshots and video

Tried out the built in Shield TV twitch streaming. You can record, screenshot and broadcast, along with video and audio. I hooked up a Logitech webcam and it worked well. See examples in shots below. And here is the link to the actual twitch broadcast of Dirt 3 gameplay via Nvidia Grid streaming. The Twitch stream shows shots of the interface. Pretty sweet.

Imgur album (the second pic shows the video from the webcam): http://imgur.com/a/WkmkR

Question to Shield Owners - HDMI-CEC?

I read on ArsTechnica that the Shield supports CEC for volume. (http://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2015/05/hands-on-again-with-the-nvidia-shield-the-first-good-android-tv-device/) How does that work on the Remote or the Controller? The article says there are volume buttons but I don't see any. What about powering on and off? I'm seriously considering the Shield TV. Now that SlingTV and the Live TV (with HDHomeRun support) apps have come to Android TV to fill in the live TV hole, and Nvidia's game stream can help with TV gaming from my PC I really think I could finally go with only one device under my TV. I would love to only use a single remote, too. (I've already got a harmony remote. And it's very good, but still not as smooth as it should be.)

NVIDIA Shield first impressions

  1. This thing is snappy, very fast, very fluid
  2. No Netflix, yes I know it's supported but it will not allow you to install online or show up in the store. I assume this will be fixed soon but it's still annoying.
  3. Live Channels is amazing. I have a HDHomeRun Prime (TV Tuner) and this acts like the original Google TV. It has my local channels playing and overlays the Android TV menu over that. The channel guide is slick too. Its unintuitive to get it going, if you open the live channels app it does nothing. You need to install the HDHomeRun app first, then open live channels.
  4. No HBO Go, another annoyance. FireTv/Stick has it and it's nice to browse through. Casting it works fine and is fast.
  5. Plex is very slick, plays back very well.
  6. Voice recognition is great, haven't messed with it too much.

My main use case is live tv, Netflix, HBO Go, Hulu, and sometimes Sling TV (for NBA playoffs). It'll be complete when it can do HBO Go. There is a lack of apps but besides the ones I listed I don't do much on my TV so this is the ideal solution for me.

I'll answer any questions people have.

The M release will make the Player really awesome

I just installed the preview on my Nexus Player, and there are two additions that make the experience much much better:

  1. Pairing with Bluetooth headphones: Exactly what it sounds like. Big deal when wifey's asleep.

  2. External storage: Android M has the capability of formatting external storage as 'internal' for practical purposes. Got a Kingston 64GB USB 3.0 drive and BAM! I've increased the available storage space by 1200%. No longer do I need to worry about installing Asphalt 8 or the Game of Thrones games. This is a game changer!

Confirmed! Nexus Player gets HW mpeg2 Decoder in Android M (X-Post /r/Android)

CONFIRMED! Hardware Decoder does work in Android M!

I just installed the Android M Dev Preview on my Nexus Player, and I am able to hardware decode mpeg2 streams.

I have an HDHR3-US running through InstaTV-Pro with the Hardware - Type B Decoder. This did not work in Lollipop, but does work in M! The HDHomerun View app did not work with the older HDHomerun device, but InstaTV does.

I would be happy to answer any questions so AMA!
