PSA: Dont change the "Automatic date & time" from on to off.

Earlier today on my mi box I saw the time was wrong so I manually corrected it and left it off causing certain TV shows in kodi to not popup. Google play store was also giving me connection to wifi errors every time I tried to open it. But after turning it back to "on" everything went back to normal.

Mi Box 4k widescreen issues

Hey all, been using the Mi Box for a week and everything seems to work great on my 4k TV (Mi Box is set to "4k2k-smpte", which was auto selected. Not sure if that's better/worse than the 4k2k-60hz, which my TV should support)

Anyhow, everything works fine until I actually view 4k source content--then I get a weird widescreen issue where I have vertical black bars 1-2 inches wide on either side. Happens on both Netflix and YouTube. If it's 1080p, it fills the screen perfectly, but as soon as I switch to something 4k I get the bars.

Any ideas?

PSA: you can change the Mi Box default launcher (fairly easily)

I've been experimenting with customizing the Mi Box, thinking of making it a holiday gift for older and younger relatives, but it needed to be more senior- and kid- friendly for that.

The default Leanback Launcher offers too many options and too many elements on screen for those purposes. Even though the Mi Box recommendations row can be removed through settings, I still wanted to narrow down the interface to a few favored apps.

I like HALauncher, because it lets you lock down the GUI to whatever you want. That way adults who don't want to get confused by the box can press the home button at any time and come right back to their pre-set group of app options. And you can set children up with their limited circle of games and cartoons.

To change the default launcher, I followed instructions on XDA, with a minor addition and a few clean-up edits.

http://forum.xda-developers.com/shield-tv/themes-apps/alternate-launcher-root-marshmallow-t3359076

(hat-tip to poster DBCAB)

The steps are below. I tried to retain the original as much as I could, and the original steps are quoted, with my edits in brackets.

Steps

  1. Find or buy a USB Type-A to Type-A cable (male-to-male), available on Amazon for about $6

  2. Find or borrow a PC with Windows 7 or higher. Hopefully it's either a laptop, or a desktop near a TV that you can connect the Mi Box to.

  3. On the PC, download the Xiaomi USB drivers for Windows. I downloaded it as a ZIP from unofficial archive GSMUSBDriver.com, but it also looks like you can download it as a RAR from the official Xiaomi Chinese-language site. Unpack/unzip the file into a location you'll remember.

  1. [On the PC] Download Minimal ADB and Fastboot[, created by XDA users,] and install:

http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=42407269#post42407269

  1. Make sure your Mi Box is connected by HDMI to a TV screen that is near your Windows PC (you'll need to see something on screen later). Install your alternate launcher(s) on your Mi Box, like HALauncher and/or Sideload Launcher (edited: Launcher forTV).
  1. Activate Developer mode: Go to settings- [Device - About] and press build 8-times [You will receive a message on-screen that you are now regarded as a developer]
  1. go to Settings--Preferences--Developer Options and activate debugging for USB
  1. Connect the USB Type-A to Type-A cable (male-to-male) from the Mi Box to your PC.

  2. Windows will recognize a new device over the USB connection and will likely fail to find an appropriate driver. You can then point it to the location where you de-compressed the driver files.

  3. A message will appear on your TV-screen asking you to okay the connection to the Windows PC for debugging.

  4. After you installed Minimal ADB, you should have had a command prompt window appear on your Windows PC pre-set to the ADB-Fastboot directory. If you don't see it, then press/click the Windows key and search for ADB and run that program (which is just a shortcut to a command prompt that opens in that directory).

  1. Type in the command prompt

adb shell

pm hide com.google.android.leanbacklauncher

[If you want, you can later] undo this:

adb shell

pm unhide com.google.android.leanbacklauncher

  1. Now press the home button on your Mi Box remote control and you'll be asked which of your alternate launchers should be used, and whether to make the choice permanent.

  2. Be sure to disable USB debugging in developer options so that you can use a USB keyboard/mouse, hard drive, etc. In HALauncher, do this in settings, and then OS Settings.

  3. Disconnect the USB cable, and restart the box.

Voila, you've changed the Mi Box default launcher.

Why root AndroidTV? Any brilliant ideas specifically for AndroidTV (not Android OS as such)?

I've just bought a Nexus Player and I can't think of a really good reason to root it, but I bet there is at least a handful of which I haven't thought of. Sure, it's nice to block ads and perhaps, if you need space, hooking up a HDD. But unlike the Android OS what can you do with root that adds value to the AndroidTV experience?

I saw a post on Reddit with half a dozen of clever suggestions and bookmarked it, but unfortunately lost it recently when I restored a previous image of windows. Sadly, I can't find it now.

Could Nintendo NX possibly be Android TV!?!?

It's been about a year since I heard the rumors that the Nintendo NX could the Android OS. Nvidia proved that a good box using Android TV is a great way to play video games. How awesome would it be if Nintendo NX did come out running the Android TV platform! I'm not sure of the chances of this actually happening, but there were rumors over a year ago.

Mi Box in Australia

Has anyone been able to get their hands on a mi box in Australia? And how did you get it? The Walmart website doesn't do shipping and the Xiaomi (www.mi.com) website isn't accepting orders untill the 8am 18/10 (2am 19/10 AEST) and I'm not sure whether it ships to Australia. Also on ebay and aliexpress I can only find the Chinese version of the box.

Mi Box - 24hz works; 60hz glitches

Hey all,

I am guessing that either my TV (55LW5600 circa 2011) or my Receiver (VSX-1120 circa 2012) are to blame, but when I put my new Mi Box into 1080p/60hz or 720p/60hz, the screen "glitches" every few seconds. No glitches in 24hz mode, but feels delayed when processing and the quality is garbage.

I am going to play around with plugging into the TV directly and other TVs in the house, but I have to access the wiring. In the meantime, I figured I would post to see if anyone has dealt with this yet. The goal was to have the Mi Box replace a Nexus Player, which is working well (from a video processing standpoint) in the same setup.

New MiBox, Netflix doesn't work.

I just got the MiBox in the mail today and I'm trying to set it up. Netflix won't open at all, I just get the error code ui-800-3 no matter what I do. I've tried their suggestion of unplugging the box. I've done a system update. I've uninstalled and reinstalled Netflix. Any ideas? Great first impression...

Mi Box drive mountpoint

I just bought the Mi Box yesterday and didn't see much on where the drives plugged into the Mi Box mount at. So, just to be a resource for people the drives put into the Mi Box mount at /storage. If you don't see it there, it didn't mount. I've had some issues with an ExFAT drive I had, but was able to get a flash drive working after formatting it as MBR instead of GPT. When I get home I'm going to try out all of the combinations.

Mi Box YouTube sync

When watching YouTube the video and audio get out of sync and it's only on that app so far. Nothing gets funky in SPMC other than some long buffering on a random stream. I have factory reset it, updated it and I've stop YouTube and reloaded it and it's still doing this. Holding out a bit of hope an update will drop in a week that fixes it or I'll return it and go with a fire stick.

Buffering and Casting problems with Wireless Bridge?

Hey guys I've a question, when I have my SHIELD hooked up to an AC Wireless bridge as opposed to a direct wireless connection. 4K Videos buffer too much despite getting download speeds of 140-200 Mbps. In addition to this, Casting doesn't work at all. I would press the cast button, select the shield and it attempts to connect but then stops. It also sometimes attempts by opening the YouTube Wrapper through the DIAL protocol, but it doesn't work.

This isn't a problem when the shield is connected directly to my router wirelessly as opposed to through the AC bridge. But I would love to have an optimal connection though the bridge for it provide roughly 40% faster download and upload speeds.

Has anyone encounter a similar problem?

Edit: Solution to this on ASUS routers in enabling IGNP shopping on the wireless> professional > select the band your devices are on (2.4 Ghz vs 5 gHz) and restarting the device.

Mi Box-Troubleshooting Netflix Bandwidth and Resolution Issues

Naturally, your results will depend on your Netflix subscriber level, available bandwidth, the capabilities of your output device, and, of course, the abilities of the device where Netflix is running.

There is a Netflix movie series available thru Search titled "Test" which will dynamically show your current bandwidth usage for Netflix and show current resolution. Sometimes takes a while to reach optimum readings. There are 8-10 'episodes' focusing on different types of tests. The results are informative and useful for troubleshooting.
