Help: Android Box M8S - issues with Kodi and getting 1080p on YouTube

Well I recently got an android box. I splurged and got the cheap M8S off of Amazon for $80. Seems like not the best option at the moment...but hopefully someone can help!

It came preinstalled with kitkat 4.4.2 and lots of addons including Kodi 15.2. Most of the addons with Kodi I am having great difficulty with. I have not been able to find a single stream on Genesis, phoenix, or 1 channel to work. Says check log, no streams available.

And also, YouTube only allows the quality to be a max of 360p. Wtf. I tried the app and using chrome to go to youtube.com, same issue.

At least I have been able to access my pc, which was my main reason for purchasing this device... But still, xbmc has a lot of content supposedly available that I have yet to access! Help.

Is The Nexus Player Soon To Be Discontinued?

The Play store has them out of stock. From that page it points to vendor partners:

Walmart: Out of stock

Newegg: Out of stock

Tigerdirect: Only available in Guaynabo, PR store.

SlingTV: Points back to Play Store.

Staples: 404

Best Buy $80 a unit which is their highest price since July.

Edit: Target just went out of stock 12/10/2015

Is this a case of them not anticipating nexus player demand, or did they just clear the shelves for an upcoming product?

I'm in the market for an android tv device but I'm growing increasingly concerned about the lifespan and support of these devices after being burned by a google tv. The nexus player seems a bit underwhelming, but at $50 its good deal (not $80) if I can get a couple of years out of it. The Forge looks dead or close to dead. The NVIDIA Shield specs out to be an amazing device, but it's overkill for my application which would be just streaming. There doesn't really seem to be any other viable options beyond buying actual televisions.

Are we hypothetically expecting more stand alone devices to come to market in the next 3-6 months?

Ps4 remote play .apk problems on nvidia shield tv

The .apk I downloaded doesn't seem to work. (It's the hacked version that can run on uprooted devices). Every button in the app I get a little bubble when clicked that says "you don't have an app that can do this". Has anyone seen this behaviour before?

Is there a way to disable Voice on search and just use the keyboard?

I just bought a Sony Android TV and it came with a basic remote that has only RF functionality, and no voice support. I'm 99% the TV itself also doesn't have a microphone, as I've tried screaming at it and get no reaction, and I find no settings for microphones...

So the real issue is things like searching in the YouTube app. It only supports voice search as far as I can tell. So I can't search in it without using my phone, which I don't want to do. (certainly for cases where my kids are using it)

So is there a way to just disable voice altogether and depend on slow screen keyboard typing instead?

Thanks for any help you can provide. I did a search but wasn't able to find any useful info.

Is there a way to get the tablet interface on Chrome?

I installed Chrome on my Shield TV, but was surprised that it comes with the mobile interface. I feel that it would be much easier to manage tabs on the tablet interface, considering I am using a mouse. So, I was wondering if there is a way to switch to the tablet UI on Chrome?

Can't get VPN to work with Netflix on SHIELD TV

I just can't get a VPN to work with Netflix on my Nvidia shield tv, at first I thought it was something wrong with the PIA VPN app, but I tried VPN Unlimited and VyprVPN and got the same result.
This is what I'm seeing, when I try to open Netflix while running a VPN:

I can use twitch and youtube just fine

PIA works fine on my PC, phone and tablet with Netflix.

Anyone have similar issues or know how to fix it? Any suggestions is much appreciated.

Tip: Using Nvidia GameStream or GeForce Now and have performance issues? Look into changing your router

For whatever reason, recently my GameStream performance plummeted. No matter if I did it locally or outside of my network, performance was just total ass. This was probably due to a number of reasons but I was sick of it. So, I decided to unfuck whatever got fucked, and I hope anyone looking to use either one of those services may find this post helpful.

For those who don't know, T-Mobile lends out $200 ASUS routers for free (or you may have to make a $25 deposit, which you get upon returning the router). These routers are some fantastic pieces of hardware, if you manage to set them up without losing your patience. If you can get your hands on one, definitely do it. If now, any 802.11ac router (or any router that isn't total shit) will work. When I signed up for Optimum, the router they gave (Netgear WND3400) was a total piece of shit. To make matters worse, the firmware on the router was Optimum's "smart" router firmware, which was the most infuriatingly dumbed down software I had ever seen in my life. It also can't be accessed without an internet connection.

After setting up the router, I connected the Shield to the 5GHz network and tried GeForce Now. Ran pretty solid, a few minor audio crackles but still far better than what itbwas before. Then I tried GameStream. Holy fucking crap, it was perfect. Buttery smooth 60fps Ultra settings performance. It was beautiful, it didn't even feel like the game was streaming, felt native. I absolutely loved it. Its crazy how much difference a router will make.

Tl;dr got free ASUS router from T-Mobile, streaming performance increased tenfold.

Bonus fact: GeForce Now comes with a three month free trial. Try it out.

Bonus fact 2: If you have any other Android TV, but still want to use GameStream, download Moonlight. You'll be able to stream games from your Nvidia powered PC with that as well.

Android TV on an AV receiver?

Ok so this is a noob question but is there any reason why we can't have an AV Receiver running Android TV. I feel like that would be awesome because we could have some really powerful hardware(AV receivers tend to be quite large so hopefully room for powerful SOC with an almost desktop grade Heat Sink. Maybe I am misinformed about the reality or this ever existing but this would be perfect for me and would allow me to have one box under my TV instead of multiple.

Is there a way to sign in as a different user in the YouTube app?

Hi,

I'm on the Nvidia Shield TV and I am not able to sign in the YouTube app as a different user. This is really crappy as I'd like to sign in another user in my family that really uses YouTube a lot and follows many channels. Is there any way around this? I'd just like to change the user in the YouTube app, not for the entire system.

Thanks.

[Nvidia Shield] Any way to bypass "Connecting to Google..."?

Hey everyone! i got a shield (TV one) as a gift but when i moved back to uni last week (in China) I cant get my shield set up as the 3rd thing it does (after language and wifi) it goes on to connect to google, which is fully blocked here.

I can spend 50-60$ on a VPN router but before that I wanted to know if there is anyway for me to bypass this?

also does the device need constant connection to google during usage? I've seen some links on VPN but not sure yet.

NewsON support coming

NewsON is a nifty service that mirrors your local news networks over the internet (as of right now, NewsON supports ABC in my area, no cable needed. Your mileage my vary though). So far they have apps for mobile devices and Roku. I contacted them asking them whether they plan to support Android TV, and they said yes! The app already works when sideloaded no problem.

Keep an eye out for this when it drops!
