Chromecast dongle vs Chromecast built-in app

Trying to get a sense of what the Chromecast ultra dongle can do that the Chromecast built-in app on Android TV can't. Thoughts?

3 Answers

So I've just had this interesting thought. Seeing as Chromecast seems to be ahead in features when compared to Chromecast built-in app on Android TV, I've decided to disable the "Chromecast built in" app on my Nvidia shield and then plug a Chromecast ultra in to another hdmi port of my TV. Thoughts?

Display size in Mi Box

Hi everyone!
So i just bought myself a Mi Box and connected it to my acer P1500 projector.
Everything works fine but the projector screen I have is smaller than the projected image and I cannot adjust it to fit it properly.
I have tried zooming out the display, but it only allows me to go up to 80%.

Is there any solution to this?

thanks in advance.

Does anyone have experience with TCL's new 2018 android TV's?

I'm looking for a mid range $1000 - $1700 tv (AUD) and right now I've got three to choose from (in no particular order):

  1. TCL C6US 55"

  2. Sony X7500F 55"

  3. (A bit more pricy) Sony X85F 55"

the TCL is looking like a steal with the exact same specs (minus the '200hz' refresh of the X85F but with a sound bar built-in and $200 less.

Thanks for your feedback.

Anyone casting NPR One? Used to work great now totally broken.

I often cast NPR One from my iPhone to my Sony Bravia and it always worked flawlessly, but in the last week or so it seems totally broken. It won't move on to the next story, it sometimes just randomly exits to the home screen, and I have no idea what's the problem - is it the TV? The iPhone? The app?

Just curious if anyone here is experiencing something similar.

Any New Devices on the Horizon?

My current streaming box is on it's last leg. Laggy, remote is dying, frequent crashes, etc. It looks like the Shield and Mibox are the only options at the moment. The Mibox seems to have enough negative impressions to scare me away and the Shield is $200 for 2015 tech, which I get is still really good tech but I can't help but wonder if something better is just around the corner. Has there been any recent announcements about anything else out there or is there a newer, reliable box in existence -- Android or not -- that can run Sling, Netflix, Amazon Video, Hulu, and VRV?

For those with Mibox issues...

I did yet another factory reset yesterday. Activated developer options and turned off the sleep/daydream function. So far so good. No remote disconnects, no hang ups, no unplugging to restart. The box itself doesn't seem to be hot to the touch either. Fingers crossed...

Sooo... Am I the only one thinking that gaming stream project Google has will be what will save Android TV?

I myself like to game sometimes, but I don't game that much so investing in a console/gaming pc and buy the games, specially living in a third world country with prohibitive taxes, is actually a very bad deal. I find this stream wave very interesting.

What do you guys with profiles related to mine think about it?

Video casting to my 55PUS8303 from Windows 10

As far as I can tell, both my laptop and my TV should be certified for it. However, when I try, the TV responds, but after a bit of loading comes to the conclusion that "file can not be read or found", Meanwhile, the "cast to device" windows program says there's an "Unexpected device error".

I tried a .mkv, .mp4 and .avi video - all the same.

Any advice?

Edit: Slight correction, it's a *49*PUS8303

How capable is the Android TV on the new Sony’s? Can it replace a shield? It does have a stout quad core 1.7 GHz processor, the Shield has a quad-core 1.9 GHz process, functionally speaking. Not sure about any IPC differences, but assume there’s IPC parity.

The MiBox and Netflix: My Never Ending Battle

Sorry for the wall of text here, but I'm frustrated and I need to vent.

I made the switch to Android TV about two years ago. Having just lost a job, we decided it wasn't worthwhile to struggle to keep our cable subscription when we only watched a handful of channels anyhow. We dabbled in some of the over the top products like Playstation Vue, but ultimately settled for a mix of Netflix, Hulu, CBS All Access, and Plex.

When we cut the cord, I really wanted to pick up the Nvidia Shield. We were doing our best to spend as little as possible until my employment situation could get worked out, so when I found out about the MiBox, I was pretty excited. I knew it wasn't as powerful, but I really didn't intend on playing games on the device, just using it for Android TV. So I hit up Walmart, set it up, and for a while I was pretty happy with it.

The MiBox did everything I needed it to do, and stuff I didn't know I wanted it to do. It worked with my Google Music subscription, gave me access to my media, all in a small device that didn't dominate my entertainment center. I didn't need the 4K perks yet, as I was still on a 1080p TV. Not the newest, but certainly not old either, and plenty good for my needs.

Netflix worked just fine for a long while too, but then one day I started getting the fabled tvq-pm-100 (5.2.5) error on Netflix. I did some troubleshooting on my own, but could never get it working. I live-chatted with Netflix, and they were able to push an update to my device that seemed to fix the issue, but shortly after that Xiaomi updated the MiBox and broke it again. One afternoon, I gave Netflix a call. I spoke with a very helpful person who spent over an hour on the phone troubleshooting with me. We tried every HDMI cable I had in the house. We tried every television I had in the house. We tried reboots, reinstalls, and factory resets.

We never got it working.

In the end, he gave me a credit to my account and added me to an open ticket, and I never heard an update again.

In the meantime, I used my Xbox or Playstation to access Netflix. Inconvenient, but serviceable.

I kept searching for help, and finally I found a lengthy thread on the Xiaomi forums with people crying about the same issue. There was a user who insisted it was an issue with the television itself, NOT the MiBox, and that replacing the TV was the only option.

Well, I wasn't about to replace my TV for a $70 box just to watch Netflix, so I filed the info in the back of my mind and continued using the service as I had been - with other devices.

Eventually we moved to a new house, with a larger living room. Once the dust settled, we agreed it's time to buy a new TV - a 4K TV with all the bells and whistles. We saved up some cash, found a great deal, and picked up a mid-tier Samsung TV (65" NU8000).

I hooked everything up, fired up the MiBox, and hit Netflix. Holy shit, it works. That forum post was right!

I was very excited to see that everything was working again. Despite the TV having a smart interface, there were some apps that I had gotten used to on Android that the TV just didn't have. I tried using the SmartHub on it's own for a while, but went back to Android after about a week. And despite the Oreo update, everything with the MiBox was right again.

Until this week, when Netflix stopped working for the second time.

No errors this time. It just crashes. Sometimes it'll load to the menu, sometimes it won't. Just kicks me back to the home screen. I've tried uninstalling (well, reverting to factory version) and I've tried clearing the cache. The only thing I haven't done yet is a factory reset of the device.

I know the MiBox is a budget device in most aspects, but most of what it does, it does well (or well enough). I'm at my wits end with Netflix though. I've basically given up at this point.

This post was mostly for venting my frustrations. If anyone has any suggestions, I'm all ears. Otherwise, thanks for reading.

UPDATE 10/16/18: I finally had an opportunity to do another factory reset, and for now, Netflix seems to be working again. I think it's pretty ludicrous that I've done factory resets on this box so many times, but here we are.

Auto refresh rate Question.

I'm trying to decide between the Mi box S and the new Firestick 4K, mainly for IPTV and movie apps like terrerium tv. The Firestick has auto refresh rate. I've heard it works well on the fire TV 3. I keep hearing about the mi box 3 and no auto refresh rate even on Oreo 8.0. From what I've read it doesn't even work properly on the shield unless the the developer of the app you need it for implements the code to work with it. Will it be added properly on 8.1 of android TV does anyone know?
